About me and my therapy practice

I am an experienced and qualified Integrative Counsellor. My approach to counselling is a flexible one and seeks to put understanding you at the heart of the work. I aim to offer counselling where you feel heard, understood and accepted. I hope to work with you in collaboration, in the spirit of discovery, understanding and change.

Especially if you've not had counselling before, it may feel like a daunting task to make initial contact. I encourage you to take the leap. Please feel free to contact me to discuss how I can assist you.

Practice description

My core training is as an Integrative Counsellor. This includes training in the main models of counselling and psychotherapy – the Humanistic, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and the Psychodynamic. This enables me to offer a helping relationship that is flexible and informed.

The Humanistic traditions are my main influence and closest to my own heart and personality. To me, this means creating a non-judgmental relationship, understanding that you are the expert on you and creating a space where you feel understood. To work in collaboration with you so that you can discover and enact creative solutions that suit you and your life.

I offer once-weekly 50-minute sessions. I don't work to a prescribed number of sessions, but have a preference for shorter-term work and will work towards a timely and supportive ending.

My first session

I hope to gain a helpful insight into yourself and your circumstances from our first meeting.

I hope to see you in context as much as possible. I find that getting a broader look is very helpful at this initial stage. I'm interested in learning about your lifestyle, specifically what you feel is working well and what you find challenging (e.g., sleep, relationship with food, phone and social media use, relaxation habits, etc.). And learning about any relevant medical issues, exploring your original family structure and relationships, and anything historical that you feel is still impacting you.

I will seek to understand your experience of mind and body, thoughts and feelings.

Building up to looking at your current situation, why you have come into counselling now, and what you would like to gain from the experience.

Sometimes this initial assessment phase takes more than one session. Sometimes a focus becomes very clear, but other times it takes a bit of exploring to work out.

In any case, I plan to save time for you to reflect on your experience with me, including how you found the session and whether you believe we will work well together. I also appreciate that people process differently; some individuals will need time to reflect on this fully.
