About me and my therapy practice

Hello, I’m A.J. I'm a personable and inclusive counsellor, working with adults and children. I will help you feel safe, welcome, and believed: whether you’re overwhelmed by emotions, or can’t feel at all.

I've been counselling since 2005. My specialisms are: working with survivors of unhealthy relationships or harmful childhood experiences, such as child sexual abuse; dealing with loss and grief; children and young people’s therapy; and the effects of religious faith on mental health. I've been a therapist in a domestic abuse service, in schools and in a college for autistic adults; and I was a family adviser in the Early Help Service. I’ve been trained to work with emotions that might seem frightening now, but can be a source of strength in future.

Please see my website for more details about how I work with children.

Practice description

I will listen to you, in the way you want to communicate. Adults may appreciate a chance to talk and be heard; or some may prefer the flow of a conversation, or being creative without judgement. For a younger child, they can communicate with me through play, craft or games – they do not have to talk openly about their difficulties to process them; for a teenager, it might be talking, or using questionnaires, or having a quiet space to draw.

It's you who decides what to communicate, while I will help you unpack your worries and hopes at a safe pace. Feeling heard and accepted helps you be in control and work out what you want to do.

My first session

The first consultation with me is free and lasts between twenty and forty minutes (depending on what you need). At this appointment, you will be able to tell me about yourself. I will ask about your reasons for seeking therapy, and I will give clear, helpful answers to any questions. You can check if I'm the right counsellor for you, so you’ll be able to think about this after the appointment if needed.

For children and young people (aged under 18), I will arrange an initial conversation with a parent or carer – this can be over the phone, online or in-person. We can then discuss how to offer therapy as an option to the young person, and how to best provide a first meeting. I have procedures as part of my practice that ensure children’s safety.

Good counselling is: having a safe space, where you want to be! Contact me if this is what you need.

About me and my therapy practice

Supervision is a breathing space for you as a counsellor and human being, to attend to your self in practice; to reflect on your clients; and to learn from your encounters and emotional responses. Supervision sessions welcome your voice, your thoughts and feelings; and help you to see your clients anew. And above all, they enable us both to keep being curious!

I can provide supervision to either trainee counsellors (reduced fee) or qualified counsellors.

Practice description

I am a person-centred therapist with experience of:

• supervising individual counsellors with different approaches

• providing training on-placement to student counsellors

• co-ordinating a district network of counsellors

• counselling clients aged from 7 to 77 with a variety of needs

Previous supervisees have said that I provide a trustworthy, safe and engaging ethos which they have been able to carry into their work with counselling clients; and where they feel both supported and freed to develop.

My first session

If you’re looking for a reflective, non-judgemental clinical supervisor, do get in contact for a free initial discussion – you can ask me about my supervision and counselling approach, tell me about your work, and then consider in your own time about whether you wish to set up regular meetings.
