About me and my therapy practice

Hello, I'm Steven, thanks for getting here.

As a counsellor and therapist I’ve worked with teenagers right up to adults in their eighties in a range of educational, clinical and corporate settings, all of which have put my skills and experience to their best use on offer. Those living with anxiety, addiction, complex trauma, survivors of abuse, bereavement and clients experiencing life-threatening and terminal diagnoses have all worked with me on either long term and open-ended bases, or short-term counselling for just a few sessions, depending on clinical requirements and/or client need.

As a young adult I trained in the performing arts, learning skills to easily tap in to expression of feeling in a clear and straight forward way - sometimes with lightness, sometimes with deep reflection and always working towards our human connection...just how it happens in everyday life, trying our best with what we have going on - we never truly know what's going on for another person as we move through our own lives and very few people truly know what's going on for us...unless we find a way to talk about it.

As well as my background in the arts, I have over 25 years’ experience in the high pressure environments of the corporate working world whilst working in the city in the communications and banking sectors. I worked from grass roots up to Director level. I fully understand the stressful pressures of the business & commerce working life - delivering on deadlines while you're trying to understand and be understood at work, home...and life in general.

I work a lot in the area around toxic masculinity and the societal impact this has on men, women, boys and girls.

Practice description

You’ll find me to be open and honest in working together, sharing what you bring to counselling as I aim to get a clear understanding of what it might be like to be you...what it really might be like to be in your shoes. As a psychotherapist having trained in the Person-Centred Approach, it's imperative for the way I work that I see things as I feel you are experiencing them.

As my client, we begin to share the story of your life and what might be troubling you and use that as our guide - as much or as little as you choose, as and when thoughts and feelings emerge...however you choose to express them.

I see this as our time to explore your way of being in whichever way feels right for you. It's an invitation for you to use counselling as a stepping stone to wherever you might like to go - it's up to you how many stepping stones you use.

I see our counselling relationship as working towards building a bond of trust - growing in a direction that might become apparent as we work together.  I hold the map while you create the journey with my reassurance...at a pace you figure out works best.

I’m not a ‘nodding dog’ counsellor – during sessions there may be times we become mutually expressive as a spontaneous reaction to one another. Other times, there may be shared moments of stillness and deep reflection. All the while, I'll be holding my regular trusting tempo of inner calm as your counsellor, seeking out the connection to be in your world, next to you and with you - not so much as a 'guide' but as a constant and reliable travel companion - noticing and commenting on the journey as you travel.

My first session

Send me a note or a text message as long or as brief as you are comfortable with.

We can look to set up an introductory 20 minute online meeting with no cost or obligation or expectation - either video or audio - or an in person and paid for full session if that is what you’d prefer.

In this introductory consultation we can get an idea of how it might look like to work together. I can listen to what it is you're looking to get from therapy and what it seems are the details of what brought you here.

Moving forwards to the first full session, this is an opportunity to begin the process of counselling step by step now you've had a chance to think about our initial consultation.

We can share a deeper understanding of what brought you to therapy and how it might work for us to continue.

I will check I am understanding correctly what you are sharing so we are moving our process of working together at the same pace...and which you feel is best suited to your needs.

You can share as much or as little as you like - there may (or may not) be lots of different aspects which all seem to link up - making it almost impossible to mention one topic at first without linking it to another - that's just how it might be in figuring out where to start together.
