About me and my therapy practice

Hi. I am Mark. If you’re reading my profile you may already be thinking something needs to change, well done. Unfortunately, a lot of men don’t make it this far.

I’m a registered member of the Â鶹ԭ´´ who has supported men in specialist drug and alcohol rehabilitation services for the last two years. I also have over 20 years’ experience in the education profession which gives me a particular understanding of some of the challenges faced by men teaching, education management, charities and community services.

While I work with men committed to sobriety, I also work with men from many walks of life struggling with anxiety, depression, and shame, loss, relationship difficulties.

I am specially trained in working with trauma and complex trauma. I practice in trauma-informed ways, which advocate that alcohol or drug use may have become a way of coping with overwhelming emotional pain, and trauma. Rather than viewing addiction through the lens of shame or blame, I aim to understand the purpose substance use has served and support clients in finding healthier ways of meeting those needs.

Practice description

I believe that healing happens through a safe, genuine and trusting relationship. Research consistently shows that the quality of the relationship between counsellor and client is one of the strongest predictors of meaningful therapeutic change. Creating an authentic, trusting and genuinely human relationship therefore sits at the centre of my work.

As an integrative counsellor, I have a person centred foundation and draw on a range of approaches, including psychodynamic, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Somatic Experiencing. Where it feels helpful, I also use psychoeducation to deepen clients’ understanding.

I aim to work collaboratively with clients to find an approach that feels right, guided by their individual needs and informed by current research.

Choosing the right counsellor matters. It's important that you find someone you feel comfortable talking to and who understands what you're going through. I offer a free 20-minute session to help you make that choice.

My first session

I understand that talking about personal difficulties can feel uncomfortable, particularly if you are not used to discussing how you feel.

Throughout my long career in education, training and community work I have developed skills to help men feel at ease when talking.

During your free 20-minute online meeting you may like to discuss what has brought you to counselling. I will work with whatever you want to bring, however, I may ask some questions to aid the process and to explain confidentiality.
