Practice description
I am an Integrative counsellor/psychotherapist. That means I blend a variety of counselling models.
At the heart of my work is a person-centred approach. Being person-centred means recognising that you, the client, are the expert on your own life and experiences. Therapy is shaped by your pace, your priorities, and your sense of what feels right.
I also draw on attachment theory to help understand how early relationships shape our sense of safety, connection, and trust in adulthood.
I use resources from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy where appropriate and welcomed by the client, to help change thinking or behavioural patterns that are unhelpful. I also use mindfulness to help with relaxation and mental clarity.
For some, a life event or transition may have knocked their resilience, or made them question their sense of self. For others, there may be a lingering sense that they need support in understanding, and perhaps changing, aspects of their life.
People come to therapy at different stages of readiness. Some arrive knowing exactly what they want to change. Others come because someone else has noticed they're struggling, or because something inside just doesn't feel right. Wherever you are, we start there.
I see change as a process - not something you force, but something that unfolds naturally when you feel safe, supported and understood.
My first session
The first session will be spent getting to know you. There will be some time to go through the agreement and discuss issues like my duty of confidentiality, and how I keep your records.
We will look at what's brought you to seek counselling and I will ask some questions about your past history. I don't go through a formal questionnaire, but I will take notes to make sure that I have captured important facts accurately. I will build up a picture of your general wellbeing and any relevant medical history.
We will explore your goals for counselling and what you find helpful/ unhelpful. For example some clients like visual diagrams, others don't. Some welcome structure and plans, others are more content to see where the counselling relationship takes them.
This is the only session where I routinely take notes.
The session will last for 50 minutes, the same as subsequent sessions and will be charged at the same rate.
