About me and my therapy practice
My name is Annie Cooper, I am a qualified counsellor and former NHS critical care counsellor. I specialise in chronic pain/illness, fatigue, health anxiety and trauma.
Enduring chronic pain and illness can be full of emotional turbulence, fluctuations of pain and coinciding fatigue can leave us in a constant state of adjustment to ourselves, our bodies and its limitations. When our bodies and our minds want different things, we can be left with an overwhelming sense of being deprived of being our authentic self. Our bodies prevent us from being who we want to be.
If you are experiencing continuing health conditions or have had a health diagnosis, you may be grieving your former self, feeling robbed of joys and experience that your new restrictions mean you can no longer enjoy. You may be longing to be there for friends and family members, when the reality is, all you can currently do is accept help, resulting in having to re-evaluate your identity and self-concept.
This adjustment can be hard and uncertain; it may lead to fears and anxieties about the future.
As a qualified counsellor with experience in NHS critical care counselling, and a major trauma survivor, I hope to offer the space where you can begin to process the enormity of what you have been through or are about to embark upon. In session I would like to help you break down your emotional complexities, acknowledge any future fears that could be hindering acceptance and above all offer a space for you to be vulnerable and make sense of your situation.

How I Work
My practise is primarily person-centred, however as my background is in psychology and human behaviour, I include integrative methods such as psychoeducation and differing therapeutic techniques personalised to client individuality. Above all I offer a space which is solely devoted to you. The time spent in sessions can be used to recognise unconscious negative self-beliefs and notice behaviour patterns that may not be serving you.
My Experience and Interests
Although I welcome a varied client base, my specialist areas are in domestic abuse, neurodivergence and chronic pain/illness. Please see my website for further details (roomtoheal.co.uk).
I personally, have dedicated significant time to healing and self-development and established a meaningful professional relationship with counselling, psychotherapy and human behaviour. I have a keen interest in health psychology/somatic work and the inextricable link between mind and body, how trauma effects our physical health and how our physical body effects out minds.
My first session
I offer an introductory call free of charge that usually lasts up to 30 mins. This is a confidential space where you might like to ask about my practise and share what has brought you to seek out counselling.
During this call, you can book in your first session if you have made the important decision that I am the right therapist for your needs.
