About me and my therapy practice
I originally trained as an actor and found that the part of my training that I enjoyed the most wasn't the performance of it, but the challenge of getting to know myself on a deeper level in order to embody characters. It was at this stage that I realised I was deeply curious about people - how our background, culture and relationships shape who we are. Every person I meet who comes to therapy is a unique individual, with their own story and their own reasons for coming to therapy. I believe that each deserve to receive undivided interest and curiosity in therapy, as it can be difficult to feel completely heard and intently listened to in every day life.
I work to create a relationship in therapy that enables me to adapt my therapeutic approach to unique, individual needs, as opposed to offering only one modality or 'style' of therapy. Often, people stepping into my counselling room needing a change in their lives and wanting to feel able to explore feelings or experiences that, for whatever reason, don't feel possible to explore with other people that they know. Therefore I offer a supportive, creative and appropriately challenging therapy approach, in order to work towards a deeper sense of self worth, self confidence and self motivation.
Practice description
During our therapy sessions, it's my role not only to listen intently to what you're bringing, but to highlight, or reflect back to you anything I may notice that could be useful to our work. We will work towards a deeper understanding of the self, through me asking open questions relevant to what you are bringing, sharing observations on how certain relationships or topics are discussed and also doing exercises or 'mini experiments' to work through certain challenges.
The most important part of therapy is that we create a relationship in which there is trust as it is this that enables us to explore feelings and challenges, to create positive change. Sometimes, I will suggest some creative exercises if I feel that they might be useful, but we will always discuss if this is something that you want to do or not and in our sessions, it is always, absolutely your choice.
My first session
During our first therapy session, we would gain a clear understanding of what you want to get from therapy, so that we could use the time as intentionally and meaningfully as possible. We would also use our first session for me to get to know your background, your relationships and your culture, as the more I understand about you and your story so far, the more equipped I will be to understand how we might work together most effectively. You have complete autonomy to bring whatever you wish to our sessions and I believe that no detail, thought or feeling is insignificant, or 'smaller' than any other.
