About me and my therapy practice

Hi, I'm Liz.  An Integrative therapist working in NW Sheffield and online.

I understand that arriving at the decision to begin therapy can be a difficult one and that the process probably seems daunting. I appreciate you taking the time to visit my profile and I hope that the information you gain here will help you. If anything isn't clear, or if you have any questions (no matter how small they might seem), please don't hesitate to get in contact.

I’m an integrative therapist with experience of working with children, teens and adults.  As an integrative practitioner, I believe that no one size fits all and I offer the flexibility to integrate different approaches in order to adapt the therapy to best suit your individual needs.  I always put the therapeutic relationship at the heart of my work with clients and work in a trauma informed, neurodiversity, sexuality and gender affirming way, with the aim of creating a safe, warm, non-judgemental space.  With a background in working creatively, I am open to finding different ways of collaboratively exploring the issues that are important to you.

I have a particular interest in the ways that early attachments can impact on our relational patterns throughout our lives and I have significant experience of working therapeutically with adoptive and kinship care families and young people who have experienced early life trauma.  Before training as a therapist, I worked for 23 years in in the education sector as a primary school teacher, senior leader and a specialist mentor for university students.

I have supported clients with a variety of common areas, including, but not limited to:

Anxiety and depression

Adoption

Bereavement and loss

Neurodiversity (ADHD and Autism)

Self-esteem

Bullying

Workplace stress

Suicidal thoughts

Self-harm

Domestic abuse

Trauma

Families and relationships

The impact of childhood trauma

Parenting

Emotionally based school avoidance

I also have a quiet, confidential space to deliver online sessions.

Once you have contacted me via email or my website contact form, I will send you an email to arrange our initial session at a time that works for you.

You can choose whether the initial session is in person (at Cornerstones Counselling, Lydgate House, Crookes), or online (via Zoom).

Don't worry if you feel nervous about your first session - it's completely understandable. Please be assured that this first session will be a gentle introduction where we start to get to know one another.

In the initial session we might:

- Explore what has bought you to therapy

- Discuss what you want to get from the process (any goals you might have)

- Discuss any previous experiences you have had with therapy (good or bad)

- Explore how future sessions might work - giving you the opportunity to ask me any questions

We will also go through the practical details such as timing and frequency of the sessions, boundaries, confidentiality and other details in the contract.

Sometimes after the first session, you may not feel that we are a good fit for each other. If this happens, don't worry- finding the right therapist is an important part of your journey and if you decide not to continue with our sessions, that's no problem. Just let me know. Sometimes, it's worth continuing even if you aren't sure - this might end up being where the work happens in your therapy and may be just what you need.
