About me and my therapy practice

Is there something holding you back or keeping you down?

Do you find yourself wishing you were able to cope with the everyday stuff again?  Maybe something ‘big’ has happened in your life and you need some help to make sense of it.

I help clients struggling with anxiety and/or who have experienced abusive or traumatic events in their lives and are looking for support to work through difficult and confusing feelings.

I provide a calm environment where you can talk things through without judgement and find yourself a path back to the life you want to live. As a military veteran of 17 years’ service, I bring my own experience of coping and resilience, along with my natural warmth and empathy along with my wonderful therapy dog, Merlin.

What is canine assisted therapy and how can it help me?

It's nothing more complicated than Merlin being present in counselling sessions.  He loves people, and will be as involved or laid-back as you need him to be.  He'll probably greet you with a toy and settle into his bed as we begin talking.  You can sit with him on the floor, next to him on a chair; the choice is yours.  His presence just makes things... well, easier.

What are the benefits of canine assisted therapy?

It can:

  • help to alleviate anxiety and depression
  • lower stress levels
  • help to release oxytocin into the body, which has a calming effect on the nervous system
  • benefit both adults and children
  • help to regulate neurodivergent children and adults.

He's the perfect companion and therapy assistant.

Practice description

My history gives me a unique perspective on resilience and adaptation, and my experience working with a wide range of clients means I can tailor my approach to what works for you personally. I have particular experience with anxiety, abuse and trauma and have worked in specialised settings with university students, children (12+) and people with experiences of abuse and trauma.

I have a background in Health Psychology (to Master's level) and I hold an Advanced Diploma in Integrative Counselling, which means I have a number of different modalities to use in my work with you. These modalities may include Person Centred, Gestalt, Transactional Analysis, Family Systems and Existential therapy, though the key takeaway is that the way I work will be unique to your personality, preferences and needs.  I believe the most important factor in helping you move forward is the relationship we build together. It's essential that you feel comfortable working with me, and I work hard to ensure that.

I usually offer weekly sessions for clients, which can be for as long as duration as required.  I am also experienced in delivering short-term, solution focused therapy (usually 6 weeks in duration where we concentrate on the 'now' and the future, rather than your history).  We can discuss any questions you may have in an introductory session.

I see my Exeter clients in a quiet, peaceful room within the Exeter Wellbeing Hub on Queen Street, which is approximately 2 minutes' walk from the Central Station.  I aim to see you at a regular time each week, so you're able to plan a routine around sessions.

ACCESSIBILITY:  I can also offer a wheelchair accessible setting with a ramp suitable for electric or manual wheelchairs with a weight capacity of 450kg. Please let me know if you have additional needs - I'll try my best to accommodate.

My first session

I offer a free initial phone call, or online session of approximately 15-20 minutes where we can discuss your needs and what you'd like to achieve within your sessions.

It's also an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have about counselling in general and the way in which I work.

If you're happy to proceed, we can then fix a regular appointment.
