About me and my therapy practice
My name is Joe Amos, I offer affordable online counselling sessions that are rooted in a person-centred approach, which means you have the inner resources for growth and change. My strength is in supporting those who feel anxious and trapped in harmful cycles to create lasting, positive change. I strive to listen without judgment, ensuring that you feel welcomed, respected, and valued throughout our work together. Research consistently shows that the therapeutic relationship is a vital factor towards achieving your goals. I believe that our connection will be at the heart of your journey towards positive outcomes.
Along with counselling I have extensive experience as a teacher both in Britain and abroad. I have also worked in various settings as a community support worker.
I also provide counselling through Physicians Anonymous, supporting doctors who are dealing with burnout and high levels of stress. You can find my profile here: https://physiciansanonymous.org/coaches-and-mentors/
As I work online only, it's important that you know I am registered with the ICO (Information Commissioner’s Office) and comply with UK data protection laws to ensure your personal information is handled safely and confidentially.
I have monthly supervision, both one-to-one and with peers, to ensure I’m working ethically and in the best interests of my clients.
Practice description
You may be struggling with addiction, anxiety, or feeling overwhelmed—areas I have a particular interest in. While my own life experience helps me relate, I won’t make assumptions. I’ll meet you, not a label, with empathy and openness. I often ask myself: What is it like to be this person, in this moment?
If you feel it would be helpful, I may—with your consent—introduce mindfulness practices or progressive muscle relaxation to support grounding and psychological contact.
You might also discover that your body holds unspoken parts of your story. I’m curious about the body’s wisdom and believe that by paying attention to physical sensations, you can gently access insight, healing, and a more integrated sense of self.
My path into counselling has been shaped by personal experience, including long-term involvement in Twelve Step recovery programmes. A question that continues to guide me is: how can I be of benefit to myself and to others?
I’ve lived and worked in both Italy and Argentina, and in both places I’ve experienced the highs and lows of life. I’ve always been drawn to questions of meaning, with a particular interest in religion and meditation. I began my career as a Religious Education teacher—though I quickly realised what I’d let myself in for! Still, I found real fulfilment in the pastoral side of the role, especially in one-to-one conversations with students. That’s where the seed for my interest in psychotherapy was planted.
Before teaching, I worked as a mental health support worker. Across these varied roles, I’ve consistently found myself in spaces of human connection—observing, listening, and asking: what makes us tick?
