About me and my therapy practice
Life is hard, and you and I are not exempt from those difficulties. I understand the challenges of living in a marginalised group. Whether you are part of the LGBTQ family, or working through minority stress and the effects of stigma and discrimination; or wanting to work through family of origin issues, I approach all sessions with trauma-informed, culturally aware approach. I frequently work with people exploring gender or sexuality and deconstructing messages of shame around orientation or gender, whether from religion, family, or culture.
I work with teens and adults with anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma, identity questions, self-esteem, feeling stuck, or those wanting to improve relationships. You may not even know what鈥檚 鈥渨rong,鈥 but maybe you鈥檙e feeling unhappy, stuck, or dealing with self harm or suicidal thoughts. It can feel like life is set to hard mode living with a neurodivergence such as ADHD or Autism Spectrum Disorder. Together we can find strategies that work for you to manage overwhelm or the challenges in relationships and connecting with others.
My clients describe me as non-judgemental, safe, patient, and caring. My style is compassionate, trauma-informed, and totally judgment-free. Whether you're exploring your gender or sexuality, navigating non-traditional relationships, healing from your past, or just trying to like yourself more, I鈥檓 here to help.
I am a licensed professional counsellor with a masters degree in counselling. I am trained in EMDR for treating PTSD and other trauma symptoms such as anxiety, fear, emotional disregulation, feeling isolated, and others. Other modalities I use in sessions include cognitive behavioural therapy, Internal Family Systems, feminist theory, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, strengths-based, and always client-centred, meaning I believe that you are the expert on your own life. We will work collaboratively to figure out what is best for you and work towards building that life for yourself.
Practice description
It can be scary to begin therapy. This is what sessions usually look like with me- they are 55 minutes long, typically meeting every week or every-other week via online video platform.
I encourage collaboration between us. I want to be helpful for you, and that can vary from person to person. I invite you to let me know what you want or don't want, or if you want to try something new. I can be flexible in my approach to be the best fit for you.
My first session
In the first session I will ask for a brief history of your life and the symptoms you鈥檙e experiencing, as well as discuss what 鈥済oals鈥 you want to work towards. Some examples might be 鈥渦nderstand myself more鈥, or 鈥済et a handle on my anxiety,鈥 or 鈥渇igure out how to get along with my mom/brother/partner, etc.,鈥 鈥渇igure out how to get things done with ADHD鈥 or even 鈥渇igure out if I have ADHD.鈥 In each following session I will usually ask how your week has been as a starting point, or follow up on something we talked about before. I will leave space for you to talk about anything you want to- that could mean talking about your day, work stress, or a fight with a friend or family member; or it could be taking about a specific deeper thing such as 鈥淚 want to talk about how my dad鈥檚 illness impacted me.鈥 The goals we talked about will guide what types of questions I ask and the direction we go, but it is always your time and I want to be there for you in the way that is most helpful for you specifically, and sometimes that changes week to week. We never have to go deeper than you want, or talk about anything you might not feel ready for.
I will point out patterns I see, support you to make changes in your life that are in alignment with your values. I will also give information on relationships, depression what鈥檚 going on in your brain when you feel anxiety, for example; or any other helpful information relating to your experience. I believe the more we understand ourselves, the easier it is to get through things.
Let鈥檚 figure it out together - at your pace and on your term.
