About me and my therapy practice
Welcome and thank you for visiting. My name is Nathan and I am a qualified therapist and registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.
I have around 20 years experience of working with different mental health issues and supporting people through common life problems. I will do my best to help if I can.
Sometimes I have really struggled with life myself and I know that everyone does at times, yet it can be really difficult for us to reach out for help. So rest assured I'll be happy to hear from you and answer any questions you might have.
I can offer face to face appointments in Kent, Online counselling via video calling, or can offer home visits in some circumstances, where needed. I will aim to be as flexible as possible to meet individual needs.
Practice description
I will work with people facing a range of different issues and am happy to discuss your needs, current situation and whatever life difficulties you are facing to see if we can work together, are a good fit for each other and can agree a way forward, as well as times, availability, frequency and any other practicalities.
My approach is primarily Person-Centred, although I bring aspects of other approaches into my work at times. I believe everyone has the innate knowledge of what they need themselves, the ability to solve their own problems, grow, heal, and make positive changes when provided with a safe space and the right support. I generally try to avoid giving people advice or telling them what I think they should or shouldn't do and will work through issues with people instead and assist them to find their own solutions and healing.
I believe that if we can build a rapport and connect in an honest and open, meaningful way, then we can work together, make progress and find solutions, or navigate a way through whatever life problems it is that you are facing.
My first session
The main aim of the first session is to get to know each other a little and see if we feel ok working with each other I guess. To set the tone, agree what to focus on, timing and how and when we will review our work together. There is also a certain amount of information gathering needing to be covered so a few questions to run through, such as address and contact details, personal history and such like, as well as an opportunity for you to ask any questions you might have.

About me and my therapy practice
I am a person centred therapist with nearly 20 years of experience working in mental health and substance misuse services. I work with people in different ways depending on their individual needs and areas of difficulty.
I believe that being able to connect with each other is of key importance in developing a therapeutic relationship, and that if we can establish an honest and open rapport, and a good level of trust, we can work together to learn and grow or get through whatever difficulty it is people are facing.
I work with depression, anxiety, bereavement, separation, divorce, suicidal ideation, addictive processes and difficult life transitions, as well as many other issues.
I offer a free initial consultation to assess how we can work together and answer any questions you might have, so please feel free to contact me to discuss.
Practice description
I offer a confidential, open, honest, safe, space in which to explore issues and can hopefully work with most clients to explore their current difficulties and learn and grow from the experience.
I tend to avoid giving advice or telling people what I think they should do as I believe that people have the capacity to solve their own problems if provided with the right support and a safe, confidential space in which to explore what's going on for them.
My first session
After the initial free consultation or discussion, the first session would primarily be used to give people a chance to talk, for me to gain an understanding of the current situation and agree our way of working together.
I would generally explore previous experiences of accessing counselling or therapy and encourage people to begin to open up a little, at their own pace, about what's currently going on for them, their reasons for being there and aims or hopes for their sessions too.
It can be quite daunting coming to a first session and often takes time for a level of trust to develop so I would always go at your pace and be led by what you would like to bring. I will not be pushing people to open up about anything. Please rest assured; you can go at your own pace.
The initial session does need to cover some assessment and practicalities such as emergency contact and physical and mental health as well as contact and boundaries so there will be a few questions to run through.
I hope this gives you an idea of what to expect in the first session, but if there's anything else you need to know, please do get in touch.
