About me and my therapy practice
People come to counselling for all sorts of reasons. Some are seeking clarification and understanding of a specific feeling, event or difficulty. Others come with more generalised anxiety, unhappiness or dissatisfaction with the situations or relationships in which they find themselves.
Regardless of your reason for coming, age or stage of life, counselling offers the same benefits.
Counselling is your time and space, free from all the usual interruptions of day-to-day life.
In a counselling session, there is empathy rather than judgement, a safe space in which, together, we can explore anything you bring. Often the simple act of being heard and understood leads to a greater understanding of ourselves and our behaviours, which in some cases helps us work out how to move forwards, and in others helps us accept where we are.
I am a client-led, integrative counsellor.
My main approach is person-centered counselling, in which the core conditions of empathy, unconditional positive regard and congruence are considered key and you are seen as the expert in your own life. I also use techniques from Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and creative tools such as visualisation, drawing, breathwork, letter writing and natural props such as pebbles and shells to explore self-imagine and relationships where appropriate.
Like many of my colleagues, I retrained as a counsellor later in life, bringing with me lived experience of both life's challenges and the benefits of counselling.
Practice description
I work in central Cambridge, with adults, and young people aged 12 and over.
I have limited availability for home visits within a 15 mile radius.
I offer a warm, inclusive, safe and non-judgemental space in which we can work together to explore whatever you choose to bring to our sessions.
My preference is for face-to-face sessions in the initial phase of counselling.
I work one-to-one. Sessions last for 50 minutes and are usually weekly but other schedules can be accommodated. The number of sessions is open ended.
Parking is available.
My first session
I offer an initial, one-off session in which we can get to know each other a little and see if we feel we would be well suited to work together.
I will ask you to tell me a little bit about yourself, your reasons for coming to counselling and what you hope to achieve from our sessions. I will tell you a little more about how I work, and offer you the opportunity to ask questions you might have about the counselling process, and voice any anxiety or concerns.
There is no pressure or expectation to continue beyond this initial session if you feel counselling is not for you at this time.
