About me and my therapy practice

Who I work with

People who are distressed and experiencing many things such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, ASC, neuro-diverse challenges, people who are neuro-diverse or suspect they are neuro-diverse, and low self-esteem.

I also work with trauma, past events and people who have experienced childhood sexual or emotional and physical abuse, abuse by partners or family and trauma.

I work with professionals and parents who feel they have hit burnout and find day-to-day living overwhelming, and feel absolutely exhausted.

About Me

I believe therapy can bring hope and change.

Thinking about getting counselling can feel daunting and fill you with more anxious thoughts. It can get confusing with so many types of therapy on offer. I remember looking for my own counsellor years ago and wanting to ask lots of questions, because it was important to me that I found someone I trusted and felt comfortable with.

Connecting with a counsellor can mean the difference between a good or bad experience for you. This is why I offer free introductory calls to people who may be interested in working with me. Having a call will give you an opportunity to see if you feel comfortable talking with me, and we can take things from there.

You will find me to be a calm and relaxed professional therapist who offers you a non-judgmental, safe and quiet space for you to talk and be heard.

I understand you may know something is wrong, but might not be sure what it is, or feel like you struggle each day with anxiety and low moods and are uncertain how to change it. This can lead to a feeling of exhaustion, burnout and overwhelm with a sense of not knowing where to start or how to stop something from happening. I can help and support you with these things.

Clients often tell me I am a warm and relaxed person, I enjoy a good giggle or some lightness at times, because it feels just as important as holding the heavy moments too.

I value openness and honesty, and will be dependable and reliable for you.

Practice description

How I work

My professional training and experience means I believe you are the expert of you and my person-centred, humanistic approach means I work at your pace, exploring your life and the challenges and struggles you are facing. In a safe space you can learn to trust yourself, and when you gain an understanding of what is going on for you through our sessions together, this will help you to gain confidence, recognise your own needs, learn to value yourself and find your own voice, and that you can change your life for the better.

My approach focuses on you as a whole person and considers the social environment that has shaped you and the outside world that might be imposing upon you, causing you feelings of oppression, shame or guilt, regret, and loss.

I offer various techniques to support you in exploring your difficult emotions. I work creatively and may suggest we write a timeline or draw something, consider using emotion cards or different objects to represent parts of you and the critical voices you may have. We will explore your confusing or complex behaviour and feelings with curiosity, which can facilitate changes in your life.

I teach grounding techniques and find these particular successful, and I offer psycho-education so you can understand why or what drives certain behaviours you might have. I have an interest in how our bodies store emotions. Often, we might not feel safe in our bodies or we might not feel safe with others, and together, we can help you work out certain triggers to certain situations or people.

Counselling can provide an opportunity for you to explore feelings of shame, secrets, self-sabotage and intrusive thoughts whilst being supported.

I work in a gentle, trauma-informed way to enable you to understand past events.

I work in an autism informed way to enable you to process and learn to connect with your emotions.

I will walk beside you and stay and support you when we explore your dark shadows and the lighter aspects of your life.

My first session

First sessions and what to expect

We have your free introductory call first. When you are ready, I will book you in for your first session at a time we both find convenient.  Usually, we work towards 6 sessions at first and then decide where to go from there.

You don’t lie on a couch or get asked to do anything odd like you’re in drama class again. We sit together and talk. I use my training to support you and help you feel safe so we can explore the difficulties you are facing from your past or present, or for future uncertainty.

I will ask you a few more questions so we can explore and identify what it feels like to be you, in your world. We can talk about your hopes and aims for counselling.

We will talk about how you process information and how you prefer to work with me. Maybe you work visually or like to write things down. These are all things we can talk about, so you feel comfortable.

There are no expectations, and I don’t make you do or say anything you do not want to. Being able to be your true self and be able to be open and honest will help move your sessions forward in a positive way, and my training helps me to keep you safe whilst guiding you or gently refocusing you back to your aims and or goals for coming to therapy in the first place.

I understand counselling can make you feel very vulnerable, and I will aim to help you feel as safe as possible as you share things during our sessions.

Your counselling is all about you and you are always in control, we always work at your chosen pace, and when we have a good and trusting relationship together, I may also gently challenge you so your sessions continue to benefit you until you feel ready to end.
