About me and my therapy practice

Welcome to Katherine Hamblin counselling – here’s a little about me and how I might be able to support you..

I come from a place of having faced my own challenges, and while some of those experiences may be similar to yours, each of us is unique, with our own story to tell. We all carry past chapters that we’re still trying to make sense of, and future ones that are yet to be written. The version of our story that we present to the world might help us get by day to day- but sometimes, we need support to truly understand how we got here, and how that journey might be holding us back from moving forward.

And maybe that’s what brought you to this page.

I'm here to offer gentle support, encouragement, and a confidential, non-judgemental space filled with empathy and care. I will be open, honest, and trustworthy, and I’ll walk alongside you in a collaborative way. Together, we can explore your story, face challenges at a manageable pace, and begin to build stronger coping strategies, deepen self-understanding, and meaningful personal growth.

I’m a qualified adult and children & young people’s integrative therapist, which means I draw on a range of therapeutic approaches to tailor support to each individual. My core training is in psychodynamic therapy, which explores how our early experiences shape who we are today, and person-centred therapy, which is grounded in the belief that with the right conditions — empathy, acceptance, and a non-judgemental space — we all have the capacity to heal and grow.

I also enjoy working creatively, where appropriate — using imagery, metaphor, or creative exercises — but only if this feels right for you. Some people find it helpful to express themselves beyond words, while others prefer a more traditional talking therapy approach. Both are equally valid, and we can explore what suits you best.

Practice description

While I support people with a wide range of issues in counselling, I have a particular passion for working with grief and bereavement — especially adults who were bereaved as children, and children, young people, and families who are grieving.

My own experience of childhood loss, along with years supporting others at St Christopher’s Hospice, have shaped how I understand grief. It’s not a straight line. It can shift over time, re-emerge unexpectedly, or stay quietly present in the background. Loss affects how we see ourselves, others, and the world around us. Whether your bereavement is recent or happened years ago, your grief is valid. There’s no timeline for mourning or for missing someone. It’s okay to feel lost, overwhelmed, or unsure.

I offer a warm, respectful, and non-judgemental space where your experience can be heard, acknowledged, and gently explored — at your own pace. I also continue to learn and share ways to support grieving children and their caregivers through these incredibly sensitive times.

Alongside my private practice, I currently support young people aged 9–18 in a secondary school. My own school experience had its struggles, so I understand how tough adolescence can be — especially now, with the added pressures of social media, academic demands, identity questions, friendship challenges, and the impact of post-pandemic life. Many young people also face difficult home lives, inequality, or sudden change and loss. Having a space to talk, reflect, and feel heard can make a huge difference.

Although I specialise in bereavement and in working with children and young people, I also support adults with a wide range of concerns, including:

• Anxiety & depression

• Trauma, loss & major life changes

• Low self-esteem & emotional overwhelm

• Stress & boundaries

• Relationships & communication

• Identity, menopause & life transitions

• Addiction, self-harm & suicidal thoughts

Whatever you’re facing, you don’t have to go through it alone.

My first session

Whether you're completely new to counselling or have been here before, meeting someone new and sharing your experiences can feel daunting. I’ve been there myself, so I truly understand. We all need and want different things from a therapist — and that’s completely okay.

To help you decide if I’m the right fit for you, I offer a free 20-minute online session with no obligation. It’s a chance for us to meet, talk about what you’re looking for, and see how we might work together.

I offer a limited number of concessional appointments to support students and those who may not otherwise be able to access counselling due to financial circumstances as I strongly believe counselling should be available to all. If this applies to you, feel free to reach out and we can discuss what’s possible.

I offer online and telephone appointments, so wherever you are, as long as you have a quiet, confidential space and a good connection, support is still within reach — location doesn’t need to be a barrier.

In-person appointments are also available from my newly refurbished counselling space in Lower Sydenham. The space is easily accessible by train, just a 3-minute walk from Lower Sydenham station. There is on-street parking nearby, and if mobility is a concern, a private parking space can be arranged in advance.
