About me and my therapy practice

My name is Emma and I’m a Person-Centred therapist, specialising in working with the transgender and wider LGBTQ+ communities with further experience and interest around sex, kink, relationships (including alternative relationship models), sexual abuse, trauma, disability, neurodiversity and emergency service workers.

The main theory behind Person-Centred therapy is that every individual person is the expert in their own life – nobody else can say what is right or wrong for you, because only you are living your life.

However, you may not feel like the expert in your life right now. For any number of reasons you may be feeling depressed, confused, angry, fearful, frustrated – as a counsellor, my job is to listen and support you to work through your feelings, so that you can better understand your situation and identify the right way to move forward.

As a trans woman myself, I have a deep understanding of Trans+ and LGBTQ+ identities, and the multiple and overlapping issues faced by different sections of the community. I work with a conscious awareness of intersectionality and how gender, sexuality, ethnicity, age, religion, disability, socio-economic class etc. can impact people’s lives and how they are treated in the world. I accept everyone as they are, no matter where you come from or how you identify, and no matter what difficulties you’re currently facing. My practise is firmly inclusive of sex workers.

Practice description

I work remotely via Zoom or telephone call. I mainly work with a Person-Centred approach, but can also offer psychoeducation around the psychological and physiological responses to sexual abuse and other traumatic situations.

I currently only work with people aged 18 and over.

My first session

I offer a free 15 minute initial consultation to explain more about how I work, to discuss what you’re looking for from counselling and to see if we would be a good fit for each other.

After this, our first full session would be spent going over the boundaries of our work in a bit more depth and beginning to explore the reasons that you’ve come for counselling, whatever they may be.
