About me and my therapy practice
I see clients at Highgate Counselling Centre and I run my own private practice. My clients report development in their thinking while feeling seen and heard which has led them to a change in how they feel about themselves. This has had a demonstrable positive impact on their lives.
Despite all the advancements we have made as human beings, it seems that we still have not learned how to develop our emotional language and this inevitably affects our relationships with those around us and especially those we are closest to. This may leave you feeling very alone if there is nobody who can understand you and where you are coming from.
So many people were never able to fully express all of their emotions during their early years or as young adults - anger is certainly not accepted by society and parents do not always know how to deal with it so it is forced inward, where it can fester. Left unchecked this anger can manifest as depressive symptoms, anxiety or physical illness.
Unlike CBT, this work is deep and difficult as it aims to link your patterns which may be confusing to understand and paimful to link to the past but may help you make sense of why you feel the way you do. The way I work is to allow you to bring your whole self. This may sound simple but can be quite challenging but my job is to help you bring feelings out into the open where we can understand your processes including certain behaviours, thought patterns, and feelings. Once this process has started, together we can work through some of the difficulties by being with them and not avoiding them, this is the key to change. Of course this process is never an easy one, the relationship with the self is the most important one yet the most difficult. This is not a quick fix, it is necessary to have a willingness, commitment and trust in the process which can lead to life changing transformations.
Practice description
I work psychodynamically and this means weekly sessions at the same time on the same day. The length of time it takes for the work to unfold is variable upon many different factors. As I mentioned previously this is not a quick fix, the work can be difficult and a willingness and commitment are necessary to the therapy working.
My preference is to work in-person as the feeling in the room can be felt more easily and this can form part of our work. I am also willing and able to work online if in-person is not possible.
Initially we would have one to two sessions that forms part of the initial consultation and this would give you and I both the opportunity to see and feel if we would like to begin working together. Occasionally it is necessary to have a second meeting as part of the initial consultation if we were not quite sure about some things or, if there is more to cover.
My first session
First impressions can help decide whether you feel at ease with someone or not and our first meeting will give us that opportunity. We will talk about the therapy, cover some of your background information and of course, what brings you. If you would prefer to talk with me on the phone before arranging a meeting, I can offer a 5 minute call. Initial consultations are payable in advance to secure the appointment. If you would like to speak with me first, please let me know by email with your availability and I will provide my phone number.
