About me and my therapy practice
Welcome! I am Sorcha, a person-centred counsellor and yoga teacher based in Scotland. For me, what makes therapy meaningful is the relationship between counsellor and client. In my practice, I work to build a space where you can feel genuinely met and free to explore what feels important to you.
I believe who we are and how we feel can't be separated from the world we live in - our relationships, our communities, and the systems and experiences that have shaped us. I try to hold all of that in my work with you, offering a space where you don't have to leave any part of your experience behind. My practice aims to be informed by anti-oppressive principles, meaning I pay attention to how power, identity, and inequality show up in the room.
I have spent the last 8 years working in helping roles within homelessness services, mental health, community organisations and LGBTQ+ support services. Experiencing the importance of supportive relationships in these roles is what brought me to train as a counsellor. For the past few years, I have provided counselling in domestic abuse services, community counselling organisations and counselling in the workplace.
I have particular interest in working with people in helping professions such as support workers, healthcare workers, youth workers, people working within asylum support services and community services. My background in these areas has given me real insight into how the work of supporting others can affect your own wellbeing in every part of life, not just the workplace.
I'm also drawn to working with young adults navigating life changes. This might include grappling with questions of identity, relationships or working out what is important to you.
Although this is where my experience lies, this is not an exhaustive list of who I work with. I would love to hear from you if you are interested in working together.
Practice description
Carl Rogers - 'The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.'
I offer counselling mainly from a person-centred perspective. This means I aim to provide a safe container in which you can get to know yourself, your experiences and what is important to you. I believe that people have the capacity to find their own way when given the space to do so, and that therapy works best when that space is built on trust, honesty and genuine human connection.
I am a trained trauma-informed yoga teacher and I integrate movement and body-based practices into your sessions if this is of interest to you. My experience has shown me that stress in one area of your life can affect your whole experience and burnout can be felt in the body. Movement practices can give us another way to work with feelings of stuckness, overwhelm and detachment. In your session, this might look like breathing together, gentle movement, visualisations, self-compassion practices and body awareness.
I do not have an end goal or expect a certain outcome when I work with you. I believe that we are always changing, evolving and your process is not fixed. It is for this reason that we are Always Becoming.
My first session
I offer a free 15 minute initial consultation, giving us both the opportunity to see if we feel like the right fit to work together. If we decide to go ahead, our first session will involve looking at a contract, getting to know each other and discussing the boundaries of our relationship, so that you feel clear and safe about the process from the outset.
Sessions are 50 minutes and are held online. We will agree together on a day, time and frequency that works for you. Most people find weekly sessions useful to begin with, though fortnightly can also work well depending on your needs and preferences.
