About me and my therapy practice

People usually come to me in either one of these two circumstances:

- something has happened / is happening (a relationship broke down, someone died, school ended, a new relationship started) and they would like someone non-judgemental and objective to support them. We usually have (bi)weekly session for a while, and once they feel they left behind what they needed to / feel adapted to the new situation, we have ad-hoc sessions, as and when needed.

- something has been happening, and they would like change: a pattern or coping mechanism seems to have gone awry, and things that used to work don't work anymore. Maybe it feels like they are stuck in a self-defeating loop, or have recurring difficulties at work / in relationships, or life just seems narrower. In these cases, we work together to uncover patterns, but also on what alternative strategies there may be. If this sounds like what you are going through, we usually try to meet weekly in the beginning to develop a relationship, and go on a journey together with the aim for you to live a freer life. 

Practice description

Things I do:

- I have hour-long sessions (it can be 58 minutes if I have to run to the next client, but we aim for 60)

- Regularly check in about how therapy is going for you, and if we need to modify our goals / switch how often we see each other

- Try to be flexible with timings, with before and after work hours available (if you work shifts and need a different time each week, we can also figure that out)

- Have loads of personal therapy, supervision and continuous professional development so that I provide a service that can be useful for you (I think a good rule of thumb is to ask any therapist you may be thinking of seeing about how much personal therapy they themselves had.)

- I will believe in your ability to change, even when you don't

- If I feel like you would be better served by another therapist, I will try to refer you on from my network.

Things I don't do:

- I don't cut sessions short: even if you tell me at 40 minutes you don't have anything to talk about, we need to explore that.

- I will never share what happens during our sessions with anyone, be it a human or AI. (I talk about our sessions with my supervisor, but that is completely anonymous, and there are no identifiable details.)

- I will never judge you.

My first session

The first session is for us to get to know each other and see if we can work together. Ideally, we come to a common understanding about what you want to work on, and if I can help with what you want to achieve. If I can't, I will let you know as soon as possible, and I will try to find you a more suitable therapist or psychiatrist.
