About me and my therapy practice

Hi I’m Lorna. I am an experienced, qualified integrative therapist providing individual counselling support to adults and adolescents. I offer in-person and online sessions from my therapy room in South Derbyshire.

I am a warm, empathic person who can provide a professional non-judgmental space for you to work through problems that are affecting you. Therapy can help to make sense of how you feel and gain greater self-awareness. It can be a place to understand and address current and/or past issues, identify patterns and create change. Confronting difficult feelings can be challenging however therapy can provide a secure place to express them. Knowing that you are not alone on your journey, but that someone is next to you along the way can provide some comfort.

I have experience of working with a range of different issues, such as, but not a limited to relationship difficulties, loss, bereavement, divorce, abuse, trauma, identity, bullying, self-esteem, self-injury, stress, domestic violence, anxiety, and depression.

I am experienced working with adolescents, having worked as a therapist in a secondary school for several years. Prior to my retraining as a therapist, I worked as a teacher in secondary schools for 20 years and so have first-hand experience of what it is like both inside and outside of the classroom environment within a school and the challenges young people face today.

Practice description

I am integrative therapist, which means I can adopt different therapeutic approaches to suit your needs. I work predominantly from a person-centered core, accepting and valuing you as the person you are. I also use Psychodynamic therapy, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) techniques.

As a relational practitioner, I believe how we relate and connect to others helps us to understand ourselves. I place great value on the therapeutic relationship and the importance of building trust.

In therapy with adolescents, I am experienced using different creative therapies such as sand tray, drawing and talking, craft and visual resources as well as more traditional talking therapy.

I can provide short- and long-term therapy.

My first session

I offer a free 20-minute introductory online Teams or telephone call to discuss a little about your reasons for seeking therapy. This is also an opportunity for us to talk to see if we feel we are good fit and to ask any questions you need to.

If you decide to go ahead with counselling sessions, our first session will involve me gathering some information about your current difficulties, working together to set goals and going through our agreement. This does involve me asking some questions about your life but there is no expectation to disclose everything at this stage. I understand that talking can be difficult, especially if feelings have been buried for a long while. I will work with compassion and at your pace, ensuring you feel comfortable and safe.

Each session lasts 50 minutes.
