About me and my therapy practice
Originally trained in the United States, I have over a decade of experience practicing with adults and young adults in a variety of settings: hospitals, inpatient psychiatry, community-based mental health clinics, LGBT+ clinics, and private practice, in both the US and the UK. I am currently a member of the group psychotherapy practice East London Relationship Therapy (ELRT) located in Shoreditch. I am also currently involved in doctoral research on the relationship between social media, mental health, and workers in the creative industries. I offer short-term, long-term, and open-ended psychodynamic psychotherapy and counselling in both remote settings and face-to-face in my consulting room.
Psychodynamic psychotherapy is based on a belief that mental health difficulties in our lives can only begin to be resolved with the sort of compassionate and deep understanding that results from discovering how issues in our present linked to issues from our past. By discovering the 'why' of our struggles we begin to have more control over them. Any exploration of the past is only important insofar as we can observe that the past continues to control a person's present, often without their knowledge. By using the therapeutic relationship to enable a deeper level of self-understanding, I hope to offer the opportunity to do an important form of listening. The inevitable goal is not just to eliminate symptoms, but to enable oneself to have fulfilling and stable relationships, to navigate the ongoing difficulties and conflicts that occur throughout life, and to feel fundamentally more free, creative, and knowledgeable about oneself. Though first and foremost, this is accomplished by providing a space to speak about yourself in a context of confidential, compassionate understanding, where moral judgments have no place.
Practice description
I view the therapy hour as a time for someone to simply be who they are, an experience that is surprisingly difficult to have in a world filled with harsh demands, expectations, and at times tragedies. Sessions take place as free-form conversations about whatever is on your mind, allowing insights to emerge spontaneously as I listen and notice to you patterns in your thoughts and behaviors that have until then seemed to go unnoticed. Over time, this develops your ability to notice these repetitions on your own so that they no longer happen 'to you', but rather become experiences you have choice over. Most of the people I work with have found themselves stuck in these difficult patterns of feeling, thought and behavior that they find to be out of their control, preventing them from simply 'being'. We use words like anxiety, depression, and disorder to describe these painfully repetitive experiences, and the goal of the therapy is to escape such repetitions.
My first session
Sessions are 50 minutes long and take place on a minimum weekly basis.
For new enquiries, I generally offer three consultation sessions (at the same length and fee) before committing to a more open-ended therapy. During these three sessions, we have an relatively in-depth opportunity to experience what it might be like to work together and how the fit feels before committing to beginning therapy proper. In order to be effective therapy requires commitment, and these three sessions enable us both to think through whether that commitment feels appropriate before making it.
