About me and my therapy practice
Originally from the United States, I have over a decade of experience practicing with adults and young adults in a variety of settings: hospitals, inpatient psychiatry, community-based mental health charities, LGBTQIA+ clinics, and private practice. I have trained and practiced in both the US and the UK, the latter where I'm currently a member of East London Relationship Therapy in Hackney.
I practice psychodynamic psychotherapy, which is based on the theory that lasting progress and reduced mental distress come from resolving these past conflicts which unconsciously continue to cause difficulties in the present. Unlike some other therapies, it focuses on the 'why' of a person's symptoms and struggles—the root causes. In this way, it significantly differs from less intensive therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and its various derivatives which do not offer such depth. Research shows psychodynamic therapy provides more lasting effects, with change continuing even after the therapy has ended, whereas research has evidenced that the effects of CBT and related low intensity therapies more often produce relapse of symptoms.
By discovering the 'why' of our struggles, we gain more control over them. Exploring the past matters only when we can observe it continuing to control the present, often without our knowledge. Through the therapeutic relationship and deeper self-understanding, the goal is not just to eliminate symptoms, but to enable fulfilling and stable relationships, successfully navigate life's ongoing difficulties, and feel fundamentally more free, creative, and self-aware. This is accomplished by providing a space to speak about yourself in a context of confidential, compassionate understanding, free from moral judgment. While at times difficult, direct and challenging, this process has the capacity to produce lasting change in how someone understands themselves.
Practice description
While I have a great deal of experience working with a wide variety of difficulties, as an immigrant in the UK myself, as well as having worked for years as a therapist in largely immigrant communities in the US, I specialize in working cross-culturally and with people who have personal or family histories of migration. I also specialize in working with people who identify as LGBTIA+, are experiencing relationship difficulties (e.g. romantic, familial, workplace, and friendships), have non-traditional romantic relationships (e.g. polyamory, non-monogamy, open relationships), and people working in the creative industries. I am currently engaged in research and writing on the interactions between mental health, economics, and contemporary creative labor.
My first session
Therapy sessions last fifty minutes and take place as free-form conversations about whatever comes to mind, allowing insights to emerge spontaneously as I attentively listen and point out patterns in your thoughts, feelings, and relationships that you haven't previously been consciously aware of. Over time you develop this capacity yourself, and when my help is no longer needed, the therapy has been effectively completed. I practice both in person and online. In recognition of the complexity of many people's work schedules, particularly with careers that require a great deal of travel, I do in some instances offer a hybrid therapy approach that combines both in person and online sessions as my schedule permits.
