About me and my therapy practice
People arrive here with a marriage that is failing, or a parent who has died and left the argument unfinished, or a life that works on paper and not in practice. Often what connects them is a sense that adult life has not matched the promise of earlier years, whether that promise came from exceptional achievement, early recognition, or simply a strong sense of who they were going to become.
The gap shows up in different ways: in relationships that keep repeating, in anxiety or self-criticism that will not let up, in patterns you find yourself circling at 3am, or in a sex life that has become complicated through shame, fear, pain, or disconnection.
I work on the assumption that difficulties like these make sense once we understand what they are protecting. What looks like the problem is often a solution to a problem that has stopped being visible. Finding out what that is takes time, and it is worth the time.
My approach is existential-analytic. I take seriously the questions people bring about freedom, desire, meaning and loss. I am interested in your history, in what happens between us, and in the situation in front of you. We work carefully, at a pace that feels safe, and I will tell you what I think.
I work with individuals and couples, in person in Hastings and online. Sessions are weekly. My practice is LGBTQI+ affirming, kink-aware and CNM-aware, and I also offer psychosexual therapy.
I am a UKCP-registered and Â鶹Դ´-accredited psychotherapeutic counsellor. My background includes work in the charity sector with people affected by homelessness and substance use, counselling at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, and support for frontline NHS staff during the pandemic.
If you would like to arrange an initial conversation, do get in touch.
Practice description
What happens in the room is a conversation held under unusual conditions: an hour a week in which nothing you say has to be managed for its effect on the person hearing it. You talk, and I listen for what is being said underneath. I ask questions. I notice what you avoid and what you keep returning to, and in time I tell you what I think is going on. Sometimes you will disagree, which is useful.
Some people come with a specific difficulty and work on it for a few months. Others stay for years. Both are legitimate, and you do not have to decide at the outset which you are.
A good deal of my work concerns family, and particularly adults still organised around a parent who was difficult, absent, frightening, or never quite satisfied. What that costs tends to appear much later, in choices about work and love that look like yours until you examine them. Working out what it would mean to separate from it, and what that would cost, is slow work and it is possible.
I also work with sexual difficulties: loss of desire, difficulty with intimacy, pain, compulsion, and the long effect of sexual disappointment inside a relationship that is otherwise good. People often find these things easier to say to someone who is not embarrassed to hear them.
I trained in philosophy before I trained as a therapist, and I still teach and write. That finds its way into the work. If a novel, a film, a piece of music or an image is what makes something thinkable for you, we will use it. I have no interest in translating your experience into clinical language.
I work online as well as in person, with clients across the UK and abroad. Online sessions are the same length and the same fee, and in my experience the work goes just as deep.
My first session
You do not need to prepare anything, and you do not need a clear account of the problem. Most people are unsure what to say and start somewhere arbitrary, which is fine. I will ask what has brought you now, something about your history, and what you would want to be different. You should ask me whatever you want to know, including how I work and why I think it might help.
Nothing is decided in that meeting. Some people know by the end, others go away and think about it, and a few write weeks later. All of that is normal.
If we go ahead, we agree a regular weekly time and keep it. Sessions are 50 minutes in person in Hastings or online.
Everything we discuss is confidential. If I think someone else would suit you better, I will say so and, where I can, suggest who.
To arrange a first meeting, email me and say briefly what you are looking for and whether you would prefer to meet in person or online. I usually reply within two working days.

About me and my therapy practice
Â鶹Դ´-accredited, UKCP-registered psychotherapeutic counsellor offering clinical supervision for trainee and newly qualified practitioners, working existentially and analytically online.
About me and my approach
I have six years' experience in private practice, working with individuals in an existential-analytic frame that draws on phenomenology, existentialism, and psychoanalytic thinking. I am currently completing the Bowlby Centre's Attachment-Based Psychoanalytic Supervision Training.
Supervision with me is a space for close, unhurried attention to what actually happens between you and your client. I pay particular attention to countertransference as a source of clinical information, and to how the theoretical frameworks we bring can open up or foreclose what we notice in the room. I supervise from within your own modality where I can, and I am equally comfortable working with therapists whose orientation differs from mine.
Who I work with
I welcome registered counsellors and psychotherapists who need supervised practice hours, and newly qualified practitioners consolidating their early client work.
Fees and format
Supervision is available online. I am currently offering the first 8 sessions free of charge, as part of my own supervision training, after which the fee is £45 per session.
