About me and my therapy practice

Hi, I'm Megan, it's good to have you here.

I'm a counsellor and psychotherapist who supports women on their motherhood journeys. The journey to motherhood is filled with so many transitions. It’s a time where our mental health and wellbeing is challenged in so many new ways. Like so many others, you may be finding yourself struggling with issues such as:

  • Feeling disconnected from yourself, your baby, others, and the world
  • Having difficulty managing emotions such as anger and sadness
  • Having intrusive and distressing thoughts, including thoughts about harming your baby
  • Experiencing challenges in your relationships
  • Feeling overwhelmed with stress or feeling the need to be perfect
  • Struggling after miscarriage and/or baby loss
  • Finding previous life challenges, including childhood experiences, resurfacing
  • Finding that a difficult or traumatic birth experience is still impacting you
  • Coming to make sense of your new identity, life, and body

I know how scary and isolating it can feel to be experiencing these challenges but overcoming them is possible. Therapy can be one tool to help you navigate through these times.

I hold a MSc in counselling and psychotherapy from Keele University. Additional training I have completed includes:

  • A level 3 award in perinatal mental health (pending final award)
  • A British psychological society approved certificate in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) (an approach which is helpful in addressing unhelpful and distressing thoughts and behaviours)
  • An 3-day introduction to the theory and practice of compassion-focused therapy (an approach which is particularly helpful for the self-criticism and feelings of inadequacy that often come up in the perinatal period)
  • Compassion-focused therapy and parenting training
  • Primary Certificate in Stress Management
  • Further training courses in areas such as miscarriage and baby loss, fertility challenges, working online, working with shame, and working with trauma including birth trauma

Practice description

At the heart of my approach to therapy is meeting you where you are at, holding a space without expectation, and offering non-judgemental support. Together we can work to reflect authentically on your current life and history, so that you can start to make any changes which feel meaningful to you.

Some people may wish to use therapy as a place to work on specific goals (for example, changing certain behaviours or lowering unwanted thoughts) whereas for others, their time may feel better used by having a space to speak about the challenges they are facing and feeling supported in their distress. We only have to discuss what you feel comfortable discussing and you don’t have to feel at breaking point to benefit from therapy.

My first session

In our first session, we’ll take the time to discuss any goals you have for therapy, allowing me to understand what you’re hoping to achieve. Drawing on my training in a variety of therapeutic approaches and perinatal mental health, I’ll be able to offer insights into what you are experiencing and suggestions for how we could move forward. From here, you can choose the path which resonates with you most. Throughout our work together, we’ll have the opportunity to regularly check in to ensure that you feel you are taking what you hope to from your sessions.

If you would like to find out more about me and how I can support you, you can find more information on my website. If you still have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me so we can discuss them further. If you feel ready to book your first appointment, you can also use my website booking system to do this.
