About me and my therapy practice
Hello, I’m Syl, an integrated counsellor and coach offering a calm, supportive space to talk things through and consider what you need next. Our work focuses on what feels manageable and meaningful for you, at a pace that suits your life.
People come to me with many different experiences, including low mood, anxiety, bereavement, work and activist burnout, eco-anxiety, and the impact of difficult or abusive relationships. I specialise in recovery from sexual and other forms of abuse, and in addiction recovery. I have experience supporting people with trauma, PTSD and CPTSD, complex grief, addictive behaviours and challenges around identity, stigma, social exclusion and discrimination. I work with individuals on relationship issues such as neglect, control and abuse. You do not need to have the right words or a clear story; we can gently make sense of things together.
I am an integrated counsellor, so I draw on a range of counselling and coaching approaches, from more traditional to newer methods, with a steady focus on your wellbeing, safety and choices. In practice, this can mean talking about current situations, past events, relationships, your body’s responses, or practical strategies to help you cope day to day.
Integrated counselling brings together ideas and methods from different therapeutic approaches, rather than relying on a single fixed model. This means our work can be shaped around you as an individual, taking into account your situation, preferences and natural pace. In practice, we might combine space for reflection and emotion with more practical tools for managing day-to-day difficulties.
Because the approach is flexible, we can adjust what we do together as your needs change over time.
Inclusivity is important in my work, and all aspects of your privileged or displaced identity are welcome here. I aim to offer a respectful, non-judgmental space where you feel heard and taken seriously.
Practice description
In our sessions, we can explore what is happening in your life, how it affects you, and what you might like to be different. Together, we can look at underlying patterns and take small, realistic steps to make things feel more manageable.
We can talk about times when you have felt unheard, under pressure or treated unfairly, and consider ways to protect your wellbeing and sense of control. Some sessions may be more reflective, while others may be more practical, depending on what you find most helpful.
Over time, this approach can support healing, build steadiness and help you make choices that fit who you are and how you want to live. Because the work is integrated, you are welcome to change your preferences and goals, and we can adjust how we work together.
Alongside general counselling and coaching, I have a particular interest in complex trauma recovery and in digital wellbeing.
I offer NET therapy for PTSD and CPTSD. I have extensive experience in working with complex situations and recovery from past and present adverse experiences (for example, sexual abuse, impact of addiction or job loss).
I have training in Virtual Reality counselling (potentially more effective than talking therapies) and geek-informed therapies. I am the founder of Voxel Hub, a digital wellbeing startup, where I support people with challenges such as technophobia, digital fatigue, online abuse, negative tech bias, geek discrimination and addictive online behaviours. I work with leaders, professionals, parents and mental health practitioners who want a safer, more sustainable relationship with technology. This allows me to offer focused support for digital-age challenges and to use modern technologies in our sessions thoughtfully and competently.
My first session
I currently offer a free 30-minute online consultation so you can get a sense of how I work. In this initial meeting, we can talk about what is bringing you to therapy or coaching, your needs and preferences, and any questions you may have.
We will also cover practical details such as session length, fees, how often we meet, cancellations, holidays and any technical requirements for online work. If another type of support seems more suitable, we can think this through together and consider other options.
It is very normal to feel nervous before a first session, and you are welcome to name those feelings so we can work with them. You are free to decide whether you wish to continue, and you can pause or end our work at any time. If this is your first experience with therapy, a consultation can provide additional support and preparation for accessing mental health services.
In our sessions, we can explore what is happening in your life, how it affects you and what you might like to be different. Together, we can look at the roots of your difficulties and also at small, realistic steps that could make life feel a bit easier.
If you wish, we can talk about times when you have felt unheard, under pressure, or treated unfairly, and consider ways to protect your wellbeing and sense of control. Some of our work may be more reflective, and some may be practical, depending on what feels most helpful for you.
Over time, this approach can support healing, increase steadiness and help you feel more able to make choices that fit who you are and how you want to live. You are always welcome to change your preferences and goals, so we can adjust how we work together.
I understand this first step can feel challenging, but I also know that therapy can be incredibly helpful. So if you would like to discuss it, you are welcome to contact me to arrange a free 30-minute online consultation.
