About me and my therapy practice
-Things don't have to stay this way.-
What if
You could gain a sense of peace and contentment to your everyday life.
What if
You could become more self-confident and trust yourself more.
What if
You could break the self-destructive patterns that are keeping you from becoming the person you want to be.
Hi, I'm Maina.
I am passionate about supporting adults with anxiety and trauma, especially when this has a negative impact on how they relate to themselves and their loved ones.
I have experienced how isolating and debilitating this can be.
People can say things like 'just be positive' or 'try a bit harder', but they don't understand that it's not that simple.
I get it. It's not something you can easily change.
How can I help you?
- I can help you to gain a better understanding of your current challenges and find a positive way forwards.
- Together, we can identify the background and triggers for your thoughts and feelings.
- It will give you the opportunity to explore and process difficult emotions and help you to become unstuck from your current situation.
- If wanted, I will support you in identifying and changing self-destructive behaviour patterns.
Practice description
What to expect in therapy with me:
I do...
- Encourage you to show up as a human being. That means it's absolutely okay to be messy, to not have it all together and swear if that feels right to you. There is no need to filter or perform in this space.
- Believe in us working together.
- Offer mind and body based strategies.
- Believe in helping you find your own answers.
- Offer face-to-face and online counselling.
I don't...
XTell you what to do.
X Think I am the expert and know better than you.
X(Other than the first session) I don't take notes when you are speaking to me.
X Make you talk about or do anything you don't want to.
X Believe in 'fixing people'.
Trauma Informed Counselling:
My role is to offer a safe, supportive space where you feel grounded and cared for as we work together. Recovering from trauma is a gentle process that moves at your pace, with you in control.
I usually suggest to clients that we work through their trauma and the effects of it by using the three stage model below as a guide:
- Initially, we can work to help you better understand and manage your trauma symptoms effectively. Some clients may feel supported enough after this stage, while others choose to explore further—it’s entirely up to you how you want to work with your trauma, symptoms, and memories.
- If wanted, the next step would be to gently process difficult experiences using approaches such as Trauma-Focused CBT, EFT tapping, and the Rewind Technique.
- Lastly, the focus then moves to rebuilding confidence, reconnecting with your strengths and rebuilding a positive sense of self.
How to get started:
I understand it can be challenging to reach out when you are struggling and it is important to find the right counsellor for you.
That is why I provide a free 20 minutes phone call, so you can ask me any questions you might have and I can find out more about what is going on for you at the moment.
My first session
The first session takes 60 minutes and acts as an extension of our initial phone consultation.
During the session I will go through a counselling contract with you and give you the time to tell me more about what has brought you to counselling and what you would like to gain from it.
It will also give you an opportunity to meet me and ask me any questions you might have.
This will help you to decide if we are a good match and if you feel comfortable to continue working with me.
From there, we can agree to work together in an open-ended way or within an agreed timeframe.
What clients have said about working with me:
"I left with a sense of hope as my anxiety and depression now had light. I am stronger than ever before and have been given the tools by Maina to cope with the knocks life throws at us." V.P
"Maina has such a calm and steady demeanour and creates a space which feels completely non-judgemental. This made me feel safe to open up and I was able to touch on some really vulnerable material in the knowledge that I would be supported throughout the session. I was able to work through current issues and also to release some things I have carried for a long time." Kat, B. Yorkshire
"She is thorough and thoughtful, making sure she really tunes into what is going on for you as an individual." Louise, P.
"Maina has helped me learn to feel safe in my body and I feel so much stronger for it. I would highly recommend Maina's EFT sessions." Kay B, Hitchin.
