I am a 麻豆原创-registered counsellor and psychotherapist based in York (YO19), offering both in-person and online therapy.
About me and my therapy practice
I am an experienced therapist and the approach I take recognises that our current way of being is shaped not only by our history, thoughts and feelings, but also by how experience is held in the body. Alongside talking therapy, I bring embodied awareness into the work, supporting you to notice how physical sensations, posture and patterns of tension can deepen self-understanding and support change.
To specialise in this area, I am currently undertaking a UKCP-accredited six-year training in Body Psychotherapy at the Cambridge Body Psychotherapy Centre (CBPC).
I can help with:
- Difficulties in relationships, co-dependency and attachment
- Feeling disconnected from emotions or bodily experience
- Low mood and loss of energy
- Low self-worth, shame or self-criticism
- Periods of transition, loss or significant change
Sessions are predominantly talking-based. Where appropriate, I may suggest gentle body-focused awareness exercises. Many clients find this integrative approach allows them to access experiences that have remained out of reach in purely verbal therapy.
Research consistently shows that the therapeutic relationship is central to meaningful change. I aim to offer a warm, boundaried and secure environment where you can bring your thoughts, feelings and bodily experience at a pace that feels manageable.
I have built strong therapeutic relationships with people living with autism and ADHD.
We will work with what you bring, exploring how past experience may be influencing present patterns. My focus is on careful attunement to you and your individual needs.
Practice description
Sessions are collaborative and paced according to what feels manageable and safe. I pay close attention not only to what is said, but also to how difficulties are experienced in the present moment, including physically. This can be particularly helpful for clients who feel they have 鈥渢alked about things before鈥 but continue to struggle with longstanding patterns.
We all develop strategies for getting through life. Some of these strategies were necessary at one time. Therapy offers space to examine whether they still serve you. You may notice patterns such as over-accommodating others in order to feel accepted, or feeling drawn to emotionally unavailable partners because that dynamic feels familiar.
I understand many experiences described as mental health problems as meaningful responses to personal history, current circumstances and environment.
Therapy can help connect past and present, increasing clarity about how your personality and coping patterns influence your wellbeing. Greater self-understanding often brings greater choice 鈥 whether that means changing something, accepting something, or responding differently in the future.
Before retraining as a therapist, I worked for many years in environmental protection and social policy. This informs my awareness of how individual distress is shaped by wider systems and responsibilities. I also have a strong understanding of 12-Step recovery programmes including AA, OA, Adult Children of Alcoholics and Dysfunctional Families, and Al-Anon.
My first session
I offer a free 30-minute informal consultation. This gives us an opportunity to discuss what you are looking for and for you to get a sense of whether you would like to work with me. If I feel another approach or practitioner may better meet your needs, I will discuss this with you openly.
The consultation and ongoing sessions can take place online or in person. For online sessions, I will send a Zoom link in advance. You will need a private space where you feel comfortable and free from interruption.
If your therapy is being funded by your workplace or another organisation, I can provide CORE assessments to establish a baseline and repeat them at agreed intervals if required.
I usually suggest an initial block of six to twelve sessions, which we review as we go. I also offer longer-term work where appropriate. Sessions are 55 minutes, whether online or face to face.
All sessions are confidential, and I work in accordance with the 麻豆原创 Ethical Framework.
I offer a limited number of concessionary spaces for young people and those on lower incomes. Please feel free to ask if this may apply to you.
