About me and my therapy practice

Hello, I鈥檓 Karena, a warm, open and compassionate counsellor based in Shrewsbury. I offer counselling to adults and young people who are navigating grief, bereavement and loss in both a hospice setting and private practice.

Before training as a counsellor, I worked for many years as a nurse within the NHS, supporting people and families through illness, loss, and significant life changes. This has given me a deep understanding of how unique every person鈥檚 grief is. No two experiences are ever the same, and each story deserves to be heard with empathy and respect.

I believe there is no right or wrong way to grieve, no rules, no fixed timelines, and no 鈥渟houlds.鈥 Grief can feel messy, confusing, or even isolating at times, and that鈥檚 completely natural. Whether your loss was three months ago or several years ago, I will meet you where you are in your journey, gently supporting you at your own pace.

Many people come to grief counselling because they need a space where they can simply be. A space where feelings can be expressed freely, without judgment or expectation. My role is to offer that safe, steady, and accepting environment where your emotions can unfold in their own time.

Together, we鈥檒l explore your experience, helping you make sense of what鈥檚 happening and find ways to live with your loss while staying connected to what matters most.

It isn鈥檛 about moving on, it鈥檚 about moving through, finding meaning and learning to live alongside your loss in your own time.

Practice description

Sessions are charged at 拢50 per session.

I offer a free 15-minute discovery call to help you get a feel for how I work and whether I'm the right fit for you. It's a relaxed, friendly chat where you can talk a little about what's bringing you to therapy, what you're hoping for, and ask any questions you might have.

I know life can sometimes be overwhelming, and seeking support takes courage. I will treat every enquiry with kindness and understanding to make the process a little easier.

My first session

The first session offers you the opportunity to explore your current circumstances and the issues you鈥檙e facing in a calm, confidential space. It鈥檚 a chance for us to get to know each other a little and see if we鈥檙e a good fit to work together.

You can talk about what鈥檚 bringing you to therapy and what you hope to get out of it 鈥 and you鈥檙e welcome to ask me any questions you might have.

Some people come in knowing exactly what they want to talk about, and others aren鈥檛 quite sure yet 鈥 both are completely okay. This session helps me understand what support you might need and how we might begin working toward the changes you鈥檇 like to see, whether that鈥檚 in your relationship, your emotional wellbeing, or other areas of life.

There鈥檚 no pressure or expectation 鈥 just an open, supportive space to start the conversation.
