About me and my therapy practice

A little background about me

Hello, I'm Donna, a Â鶹ԭ´´ Accredited Counsellor/Psychotherapist, and the founder of Through the Trees Counselling.

I honestly love the work I do. It is a privilege to support people through some of the most challenging times in their lives and to witness the positive changes that can happen when they feel heard, understood and accepted.

I have experience working with adults and teenagers 14 years + experiencing anxiety, health anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, stress, relationship difficulties, men's issues, intrusive thoughts, bullying, exam pressure, self-harm, and emotional, sexual, psychological, domestic abuse, bereavement & trauma, Addiction - gambling, alcohol and drug misuse.

Reaching out for support can feel overwhelming. I know this because I have experienced therapy myself. I remember trembling making that first call. I also recall walking into my first session unsure of what to expect or where to begin. I recall saying to my therapist 'I really don't know where to start'. Looking back, it was one of the best decisions I ever made. That experience helped me understand just how much courage it takes for each client to ask for help. I know I have been there!

I always knew I wanted to help people, but I just did not know in what field. One day whilst working my 9 -5 job in 2013, I saw an advert; Volunteer Befriender needed within the Mental Health Sector. It was one of the most rewarding roles I have ever done and has led me to where I am today.

Alongside my private practice, I also have over 12 years' experience working within a mental health charity, supporting people diagnosed with mild to acute mental health.

During my years of counselling, I have seen people come to me believing they will always feel this way, only to leave months later feeling calmer, more confident and more themselves again.

Everyone's story is different, but seeing those changes is one of the reasons I love this work.

Practice description

How I can help you :-)

Life can sometimes feel overwhelming, and it isn't always easy to make sense of what's going on in your own head. You may have spoken to family or friends, but sometimes you need someone who isn't involved—someone who will simply listen without judgement.

I won't tell you how to live your life or make decisions for you. Instead, I'll work alongside you, helping you explore what's been happening, understand yourself a little better, and find a way forward that feels right for you.

Counselling isn't about having all the answers. It's about giving yourself the time and space to understand yourself, and I'd be there to help you along the way. I always explain counselling to my clients as 'self-care'.

Whatever has brought you here, you don't have to face it alone. I would be privileged to support you on your journey.

My Counselling Style

When you are sitting with me, there is no pressure to know what to say or where to begin. Some clients arrive with a very clear idea of what is wrong, whilst others just know that they do not feel themselves anymore. Both are completely okay. We will work it out together.

My aim is always to offer a warm, compassionate and non-judgemental space where you can talk openly at your own pace.

No two people are the same, so I don't believe counselling should be either. I work as an integrative counsellor, which means I can draw on different therapeutic approaches to suit you as an individual rather than expecting you to fit one particular model.

Clients often tell me they feel lighter, stronger or more like themselves again, even if they can't quite explain why. Therapy is a process, and meaningful change often happens one conversation at a time.

My role is to understand your world from your perspective, without judgement, and to support you in finding a way forward that feels right for you.

Thank you so much for reading my profile:-)

My first session

Your first session

Your initial session will consist of me clarifying how we will work together making sure you understand everything about the service that I will be providing. This will then lead into your session.  We'll talk about what's brought you to counselling, what you're finding difficult at the moment, and what you'd like life to look like if things felt better. From there, we'll decide together how we can work towards that.

I am completely aware that it can be quite scary and daunting coming for your first therapy session even if you have previously had counselling. Clients have said that they feel better even after their first session simply because they have let go of things that they have been holding onto or even just saying things out loud.

At the end of your first session, I will check in with you to see how you found the experience. You can either book another session before you leave or if you are not sure and just want to think about it you can go away and just get back to me. Either way is completely fine.

My way of working is 'open ended' which means there is no set limit to your sessions. We will review together as we go along which is a really important aspect of my way of working. My aim is that my clients are always at the centre of their therapy.

Consistency is key at the beginning of therapy. I understand that not everyone is able to commit to weekly sessions either because of personal finances or general life commitments   However, even with fortnightly sessions clients can still reap the benefits.

I am flexible on a session-to-session basis for example if one week you prefer face to face or the next time online. We can arrange this together.

One more thing to bear in mind is that therapy unfortunately is not a quick fix. You may find that you only need 3 or 6 sessions or you may be someone that needs considerably more. Everyone is unique.

If what you've read resonates, I'd love to hear from you.

Donna :-)
