My first session
During our first session, I will endeavour to make you feel comfortable, understood and safe.
In due course, a discussion will be carried out to explore what has brought you to therapy. Meanwhile, I will explain to you how I work and how the counselling sessions may be able to help you. To achieve this, it may involve me asking you a few questions about things such as what are your goals, what would you like to get out of therapy. The first session may also involve completing a short questionnaire about your mood and current psycho-social conditions, etc, this will enlighten me with the world you are living in and where I may be able to help you more.
If we both agree that we would like to work together, I will explain to you what you can expect from me and would like you to consider, such as appointments/cancellations/confidentiality, etc. We will then both sign a written consent that agrees on a number of sessions and begin our journey.

About me and my therapy practice
I am Herman CHAN, a Registered Social Worker (RSW), Member of the Hong Kong Professional Counselling Association (MHKPCA), Member and Registered Counsellor of the Australian Counselling Association (MACA), and Registered Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (MÂ鶹Դ´). I have more than 20 years of professional experience in social work, Employee Assistance Programmes (EAP), counselling and psychotherapy, mental health services and crisis intervention.
I believe that every client is unique and that there is no single therapeutic approach that works for everyone. I therefore work in a flexible and integrative way, adapting my approach to each client’s circumstances, needs, expectations and goals.
I aim to provide a safe, respectful and non-judgemental space where clients can explore their thoughts, emotions, relationships and life experiences at their own pace. I see counselling and psychotherapy as a collaborative process. Rather than simply providing answers, I work alongside clients to help them gain greater self-awareness, recognise their strengths and resources, consider different perspectives and explore possible ways forward.
I balance structured therapeutic interventions with flexibility, responding to what emerges during our work together. My aim is not only to support clients with their immediate concerns, but also to help them develop resilience, self-confidence and practical resources for facing future challenges.
Ultimately, I hope to build a therapeutic relationship in which clients feel heard, respected and empowered to make meaningful changes in their lives.

My first session
During our first session, my priority is to help you feel comfortable, heard and safe.
We will explore what has brought you to counselling, what you would like support with, and what you hope to achieve from therapy. I will also explain how I work and discuss how counselling may support you. I may ask some questions about your current circumstances, experiences, relationships, emotional wellbeing and goals, so that I can better understand your situation and consider how I may be able to help.
Where appropriate, the first session may also include a brief questionnaire to explore your current mood and psychosocial wellbeing. This is not intended to provide a diagnosis, but to give us additional information that may help inform our work together.
The first session is also an opportunity for both of us to consider whether we feel comfortable working together. If we mutually agree to continue, I will explain the arrangements for our work, including appointments, cancellations, confidentiality and other relevant matters. We will then complete the necessary counselling agreement and consent arrangements before continuing with our therapeutic work.
There is no pressure to make a decision during the first session. I believe that a good therapeutic relationship is important, and I encourage you to ask questions and consider whether my approach feels right for you.
