About me and my therapy practice

Hi, my name is Robert Ferreira, and as a qualified Integrative Counsellor, I have experienced how life can be challenging, demanding and sometimes just hard, so we may feel the time is right to focus on ourselves and our mental health or maybe something from the past, present or uncertain future.

Having worked previously as a counsellor in the NHS for an Inner London Borough via a leading mental health charity has given me the experience of working with a diverse clientele, with varying presentations.

I do value my private work, which allows me to work in a way where we are not time-limited. I work relationally and believe that our relationship is at the heart of the therapy, but also in a space where my clients can be autonomous on their path to where they want or need to go.

Qualities I bring into my work include compassion, curiosity, humour and warmth.

I work in an Integrative manner, which allows me to draw on knowledge and skills from various counselling approaches based on your individual circumstances in order to provide the most effective and personalised therapy for your needs.

I am able to provide support and guidance with common emotional, behavioural and psychological conditions, including (but not limited to) low mood, feeling down, hopelessness, low self-esteem, panic and anxiety, worry, procrastination, rumination, catastrophising, imposter syndrome, and perfectionism. I also work with the impact of life events such as bereavement, relationship issues and work stress.

Whilst it is not my intention to build any kind of speciality, I have built up experience working with the LGBTQ+ community and neurodivergent (diagnosed and undiagnosed) clients who, over time, have sought my assistance in working through the individual challenges that these communities may face. I do this with a focus on acceptance, compassion, and reframing negative self-views, but also an emphasis on an individual frame of reference.

Feel free to email me to know more.

Practice description

I work largely in-person in my practice based in Deptford SE8, which offers a comfortable, safe space. It is important for me to offer this as part of the therapeutic experience, where I get to meet my clients in person in an otherwise largely digital world.

Counselling is your time to talk in a confidential, non-judgemental environment. Often people seek counselling for a specific reason, such as a mental health condition such as depression or anxiety, to discuss something from the past or relationship or work issues (or indeed any combination of these).

Drawing on my core modalities of Person-Centred and Psychodynamic therapies, we can work together on understanding why these issues are presenting as well as exploring ways to overcome them or provide you with the tools to address what you may face.

I may also introduce other techniques, drawing on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) or Solution-focused therapy. I am an eclectic practitioner, and working Integratively allows me to not be limited to a particular theory or technique but use them in a combination unique to your presenting issue.

I feel that counselling works best with a collaborative relationship in a safe, open, compassionate environment. At times, counselling may be challenging and is a commitment, and at other times, very fulfilling, but ultimately, we will work together to provide you with emotional support and guidance through these difficult times or specific mental health issues.

Please note that I believe that for counselling to work best, sessions initially should be weekly until we can agree together on a different frequency.

I have experience working with a diverse group of clients from many cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds with a wide variety of issues.

My first session

New to counselling?

If you haven’t had counselling before, I would recommend that our first session acts as a no-obligation consultation session, charged at the standard rate, where we can explore whether counselling is right for you, what your expectations are, and whether you feel we can work together.

Had counselling before?

We can use the first session to establish how I can help you and whether you feel we can work together.

The first session allows us to work together on self-exploration to establish what you hope to gain from counselling, whether we can work together and what is achievable. Often it is useful to have a clear goal or objective in mind to ensure you are getting the most from the work, but that isn’t essential. At other times you may want to be spontaneous, there is no right or wrong.

Please feel free to e-mail me or call if you need to know more or set up your first session.
