About me and my therapy practice

You might be feeling overwhelmed by all the people in your life and the things you have to do to make life feel less chaotic, less out of your control. You may have found ways of coping with this emotional turmoil, which might bring quick relief for now but the same old problems and feelings build up again in time. You might feel bad about yourself, maybe use addictive coping behaviours, repeatedly self-shame or even self-harm in some way.

This may seem like the only emotional outlet available to you at present. By listening attentively to how you see yourself and what your experience of life is, I can help you to understand and perhaps come to terms with some of your emotions such as shame, self-loathing, anger or failure, which may overwhelm you or those who you care for.

I offer you a non-judgemental and neutral safe space. By gently questioning, we can look together at the circumstances which have led you to this point. I can introduce you to different ways of experiencing, coping with and framing your feelings - and where they might be coming from. I have over a decade of experience working with these kinds of overwhelming emotions, including as an Integrative Counsellor and Psychotherapist, in a mental health referral service at Mind.

Previously I studied for a Master of Science Degree in Psychology at the University of Bristol. This research into neuroscience, developmental and social psychology has proved an invaluable resource to my understanding of childhood trauma, post traumatic stress and how childhood sexual abuse may impact you as a child, an adolescent and an adult. It underpins my Post Graduate Level 7 training as an Integrative Counsellor and Psychotherapist, which draws on a Person Centred approach, a Psychodynamic Approach and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (a little more on this below).

Practice description

It can be more useful to talk about 'what has happened to you' rather than 'what is wrong with you'. By talking, and more importantIy, being seen and heard, we can look at who you really are. I offer a safe and neutral environment, along with my training as an integrative counsellor and psychotherapist. This means we can explore how you uniquely experience your own life, (the person centred aspect of my integrative model) and to understand how you might have arrived at this point (the psychodynamic aspect). I can help you identify your thoughts, feelings and behaviours, to enable you to make any changes that might be helpful to you (the Cognitive Behavioural Therapy aspect). I will work with you creatively, to find what will help you. You may not notice how I use my theoretical training, but I ask what you might find helpful from the variety of techniques I offer, which include role play, writing, visualisation and breathing exercises for trauma, anxiety or stress relief, to name a few.

Along with the four years experience with this integrative model, I have worked creatively using the above techniques for over a decade in therapeutic education, including working with special needs children, young people and adults. I draw on this range and depth of experience to find the right way for you as the unique person you are, to feel more comfortable with yourself and move towards a way of living more to your choosing.

My first session

The right therapist is key to your therapeutic journey.

First we will need to work out together whether you think short-term therapy will meet your needs, perhaps if you have a single issue you wish to work on. Longer-term therapy may be more suitable, if your issues have been going on for some time and you feel stuck in a pattern of behaviour and relating which is upsetting or unhelpful to you.

If you decide to go ahead on your therapy journey with me, we will decide together on an initial number of sessions for which we will meet. This is likely to be around six 50 minute sessions, for short term work, or up to twelve initially if your needs are more complex, with more open ended work available if we agree this is what would work best for you.

Based on these things, we will make a contract together of how we will work, detailing what you can expect from me, such as respect, punctuality and reliability, how I will store and keep your data secure and for how long. Similarly, what I can expect from you in the way of keeping to our session commitments and schedule.

I will need a few practical details, for safety reasons, such as your GP, someone who I can contact in the case of an emergency and any medication you may be on at present.

If you want to book an initial trial 15 minute telephone consultation free of charge you can email me at: chris.bailey.therapy@posteo.uk and we can arrange a time to talk. We can follow this up by meeting in person for an initial session.

About me and my therapy practice

鈥淪upervision is鈥 about creating a sense of belonging in our supervisees and building the strength in them to be courageous practitioners.鈥 (British Psychological Society Supervisor Training)

As this quotation suggests, my training as a clinical supervisor was with (and as a member of) the British Psychological Society (BPS). As such, it provided a thorough overview of current Western supervisory models. The training drew on the most effective commonalities these models have to offer. This means I can work with you reflexively, in either a singular or an integrated modality, which is best suited to your clinical context, experience and practitioner strengths.

Essentially, you may be looking for someone who you feel can come to understand the unique qualities you bring to being a therapist - what those qualities might mean, at any given moment, in a therapeutic space with your client - and what your client's unique qualities might be. And how these might be affecting each other in that moment, and what that might mean dynamically, therapeutically, between you.

This relational, co-constructionist approach sits at the heart of both what I offer as a therapist and a supervisor. In supervision, this is more about how to support you as a safe enough, well informed, self aware therapeutic container, as we look together both at how best to support your clients and to provide a safe container for you.

To support this process, we need to consider your current clinical settings and experience. You might be new to private practice, having recently embarked on work which comes with higher levels of personal and professional autonomy and increased responsibilities. You may be working as part of an agency, be that the NHS or other, or perhaps a combination of these.  Or you may be looking for a change in how your clinical work is supported in supervision - your client presentations may have altered and you now need different experience and expertise from your supervisor.

Practice description

We can work together to identify and access the skills and clinical expertise you already have. I will aim to help you flex your therapist鈥檚 theoretical and creative muscles, to work with you to keep you safe enough, both physically and psychologically - and likewise your clients.

I have learned through my own experiences of being clinically supervised, that a large part of the work is about enabling me to be both authentically myself and present, so I can creatively use what is already there in my extensive therapist's practice. This has been the most useful part of my own supervision, in helping sit with uncertainty, both mine and my clients', on the therapeutic journey.

There are important behaviours as your supervisor which I aim to model: Trustworthiness, humour, gentle non-defensive guidance, curiosity, compassion and affection, belief in your capabilities and strengths. Importantly, I offer a 鈥榩ower with鈥 rather than a 鈥榩ower over鈥 approach. I believe this to be important for safe working practices and boundaries. I aim to be neither collusive or avoidant.

Through careful and attentive listening, kind and specific feedback, I aim to facilitate reflection and introspection.

I might encourage you to think cognitively and analytically; for example, offering a different theoretical perspective or an alternative approach.

Sometimes I may use a more catalytic intervention, bringing challenge to your practice, that you might consider trying different things with your client.

My role and responsibilities as your potential supervisor would change as you change and develop as a therapist. I would work with you to grow your practices to match your autonomy and skills, depending on what stage you are at in your clinical practice.

I will aim to help you flex your therapist鈥檚 theoretical and creative muscles, to work with you to keep you safe enough, both physically and psychologically - and likewise your clients.

My first session

Initially we can work together to identify the skills and clinical expertise you already have.

Through a collaborative and needs based contracting process, we will make clear what we can expect from each other, in terms of what is your responsibility and what is mine, how often we shall meet and what outcomes might you reasonably expect from each session. For example, you might decide you wish to come prepared with specific questions or feelings you need to explore, or alternatively you may need permission to arrive with an open heart and mind, to allow clinical undercurrents to surface and be seen and attended to.

These are not things you need to decide ahead of an initial or of subsequent sessions, or make explicit to me, although you may wish to do so. You might prefer a directive approach, or one that is more spacious and loose. Again, we can discuss these different approaches and think together about how we might proceed as supervisor and supervisee.

My experience as a supervisor span over 5 years, in varying clinical contexts.

To summarise some of what you can expect from supervision, I realise you will need:

- To gain sufficient clarity of your position in relation to your work

- The confidence that you鈥檙e on the right track, or have already the skills to continue working effectively with said client -

- Help identifying which interventions might alternatively work

- Affirmation of the efficacy of your work already in progress

As a registered member of both the British Psychological Society and the 麻豆原创, I am bound by their ethical codes of practice. These frameworks will help to guide our initial session and how we agree to work with respect to confidentiality, as well as sharing an awareness of the ethical, safeguarding and legal limitations of this.
