Where appropriate, there may also be the opportunity to take therapy sessions outdoors within the grounds.

Appointments are available 7 days a week, including evenings and weekends. Therapy can be offered on a short-term or long-term basis depending on your individual needs. I aim to respond to all enquiries within 24 hours.

About me and my therapy practice

I am a psychodynamic psychotherapist who believes that many of the difficulties we experience in the present can be influenced by past experiences, relationships and unconscious patterns of relating. Therapy provides an opportunity to explore these experiences in greater depth, helping you to develop insight, self-awareness and a deeper understanding of yourself and your relationships.

I understand that reaching out for therapy can feel daunting, and finding the right therapist is an important part of the process. I therefore aim to offer a warm, supportive and non-judgemental space where you feel heard, understood and able to speak openly about your experiences.

My approach is grounded in psychodynamic psychotherapy while also drawing on other therapeutic approaches where appropriate. This allows me to tailor therapy to your individual needs while remaining curious about the deeper emotional processes that may be influencing your thoughts, feelings and behaviours.

I work with individuals, couples and families and have experience supporting people with a wide range of difficulties, including anxiety, depression, trauma, addiction, relationship difficulties, low self-esteem, grief, identity concerns and life transitions. I also have a particular interest in attachment, relationship dynamics, psychosexual theory, and supporting neurodivergent clients, including those with ADHD and autism.

Sessions usually take place weekly at the same time and can be offered face-to-face, online or by telephone. We will work at a pace that feels safe and manageable for you, recognising that therapy can sometimes feel challenging whilst also offering opportunities for growth, change and greater self-understanding.

At the heart of my work is the belief that meaningful change occurs through a safe, trusting and authentic therapeutic relationship.

Practice description

My name is Dr Denise Stevens, and I am a Psychodynamic Psychotherapist, Counsellor and Clinical Supervisor.

I hold a Professional Doctorate in Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy, a Master’s degree in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, and a degree in Person-Centred and Existential Counselling.

My work is grounded in psychodynamic psychotherapy, which explores how past experiences and relationships can influence our thoughts, feelings and behaviours in the present. Alongside this foundation, I draw on other therapeutic approaches where appropriate, tailoring therapy to the needs of each individual, couple or family.

I originally trained while working within homelessness services and the probation service, which led me to develop a deeper interest in the emotional and relational difficulties people experience. This inspired me to undertake further training in psychodynamic psychotherapy and complete doctoral research exploring the therapeutic relationship.

I have worked across homelessness services, probation, the NHS and private practice, supporting people experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, addiction, relationship difficulties, personality disorders, low self-esteem, grief and life transitions.

Alongside individual therapy, I also work with couples and families. I have a particular interest in attachment, relationship dynamics, communication difficulties, intimacy, sexual difficulties and psychosexual theory. I also have an interest in supporting neurodivergent clients, including those with ADHD and autism.

My aim is to provide a safe, confidential and reflective space where experiences can be explored with curiosity, compassion and understanding, creating opportunities for greater self-awareness, emotional growth and lasting change.

My first session

I offer a free initial telephone consultation, providing an opportunity for us to discuss what has brought you to therapy, what you are hoping to gain from the process, and any questions you may have. It is also an opportunity for you to decide whether you feel comfortable working with me, as finding the right therapist is an important part of the therapeutic journey.

If we both feel that we can work together, we will arrange an assessment session. This allows us to explore in greater depth the difficulties that have brought you to therapy, your current circumstances, relevant background information, and what you hope to achieve through therapy.

Should we decide to continue, we will agree a regular weekly appointment at the same time each week. Sessions can be offered face-to-face, online or by telephone.

The length of therapy will depend on your individual needs and goals. Some people find that short-term therapy is sufficient for a specific issue, while others prefer longer-term work that allows for a deeper exploration of themselves, their relationships and recurring patterns in their lives.

Beginning therapy can feel like a significant step, and it is natural to feel uncertain or anxious about the process. My aim is to provide a safe, supportive and non-judgemental environment where you can explore your thoughts and feelings at a pace that feels manageable for you.

This research reflects my interest in understanding human relationships and emotional experience.

At the heart of my work is the belief that our early experiences and relationships shape how we understand ourselves, relate to others and navigate the world. A psychodynamic approach offers an opportunity to explore these patterns, helping us develop insight into difficulties that may feel repetitive, confusing or difficult to change.

I understand that reaching out for therapy can feel daunting. Finding a therapist with whom you feel comfortable and understood is important. I therefore aim to offer a warm, thoughtful and non-judgemental space where you can speak openly about your experiences and feel genuinely heard.

I have worked across a variety of settings, including homelessness services, probation, the NHS and private practice, supporting individuals experiencing a wide range of emotional and psychological difficulties. Alongside my clinical work, I provide supervision for trainee and qualified counsellors and psychotherapists.

I hold a Professional Doctorate in Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy from the University of Essex, a Master’s degree in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, and a degree in Person-Centred and Existential Counselling. My doctoral research explored how the telephone influences the therapeutic relationship, emotional expression and engagement within counselling.

My supervisory approach is grounded in psychodynamic thinking while remaining collaborative, supportive and responsive to the needs of each supervisee. I aim to provide a safe and reflective space where practitioners can explore their clinical work, develop their professional identity, think about ethical practice, and deepen their understanding of therapeutic relationships and processes.

I welcome supervisees from a range of theoretical backgrounds and levels of experience. Whether you are in training, newly qualified, or an experienced practitioner, supervision can provide an opportunity to reflect on client work, celebrate strengths, explore challenges and support ongoing professional development.

At the heart of my supervision practice is the belief that growth occurs through curiosity, reflection and authentic professional relationships. My aim is to offer a supportive environment where supervisees feel both challenged and encouraged in their development as practitioners.

Practice description

I am Dr Denise Stevens, a Psychodynamic Psychotherapist, Counsellor and Clinical Supervisor, holding a Professional Doctorate in Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy, a Master’s degree in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, and a degree in Person-Centred and Existential Counselling.

My work is grounded in psychodynamic thinking, while also drawing on a range of therapeutic approaches to meet the needs of individual clients and supervisees. I originally trained in Person-Centred and Existential Counselling at the University of Essex while working within homelessness services and the probation service. This experience sparked my interest in the deeper emotional and unconscious processes that shape human behaviour, relationships and psychological distress, leading me to further training in psychodynamic psychotherapy.

I have many years of experience working with people experiencing a wide range of emotional and psychological difficulties, including addiction, trauma, personality disorders, relationship difficulties and complex emotional challenges. My clinical experience spans homelessness services, probation, the NHS and private practice.

Alongside my therapeutic work, I provide supervision for trainee and qualified counsellors and psychotherapists. I aim to offer a supportive and reflective supervisory relationship where practitioners can think about their client work, professional development, ethical practice and the therapeutic relationship. I welcome supervisees from a range of theoretical backgrounds and levels of experience.

At the heart of my work is the belief that growth and learning occur through curiosity, reflection and authentic relationships. My aim is to provide a safe, confidential and thoughtful space where both clients and supervisees can develop greater understanding, confidence and capacity for change.

My first session

Our first session will provide an opportunity for us to meet and explore your supervisory needs in a safe, supportive and reflective space. We will discuss your current client work, training or professional role, theoretical orientation, and what you hope to gain from supervision.

The initial session also allows us both to consider whether we feel we would be a good fit to work together. If we decide to continue, we can agree a supervision arrangement that meets your professional requirements and the expectations of your training provider or accrediting body.

I welcome both trainee and qualified counsellors and psychotherapists and offer concessionary rates for counselling and psychotherapy students.
