About me and my therapy practice
I work with adults facing personal, professional and psychological difficulties, offering formulation-led integrative therapy grounded in depth and practical clarity. I also work with couples on a limited basis.
Over time, I have found that my work tends to centre on thoughtful, capable adults who are often functioning well on the surface, but who experience recurring relational insecurity, chronic self-doubt, or longstanding patterns that feel resistant to change despite insight. I am particularly interested in entrenched relational patterns, attachment-related difficulties, obsessive or over-mentalising styles, and the longer-term effects of early emotional separation, including boarding school experiences.
My approach is formulation-led: we work to understand how your particular pattern developed, how it sustains itself, and what maintains it now. This allows us to focus either on lasting psychological change or on immediate practical challenges, depending on what you need.
I offer professional and confidential psychotherapy, counselling and coaching in Shoreham-by-Sea and Hove, as well as online therapy for clients throughout the UK and internationally.
Practice description
Steve Perkins: BSc(Hons), PGDip(Dist) Integrative Counselling & Coaching, MSc(Dist) Psychotherapy, CSAccred.(AAC), MÂ鶹Դ´, AICTP
My clinical approach is integrative, drawing on a range of traditions including CBT, person-centred, psychodynamic, existential, gestalt and transactional analysis, alongside coaching approaches where helpful. Working integratively reflects a belief that no single psychological theory holds all the answers, and that different perspectives can be brought together thoughtfully depending on the needs of the client.
Taken together, this combination supports clients in making sense of longstanding patterns that have felt difficult to change, while also allowing space for practical movement where appropriate.
I spent over twenty years working in finance, leading large departments in high-pressure settings. This background informs my understanding of professional stress, responsibility and performance, alongside deeper psychological work.
I am an Accredited Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (Â鶹Դ´) and a Fellow of the British College of Therapeutic Professionals (BCTP). I undertake regular professional training and supervision in line with professional and ethical requirements.
My first session
A consultation is a chance for us to talk about what brings you to therapy and what you would like from the work. It’s also an opportunity to see whether we feel a good fit to work together.
Some people arrive with a clear aim; others feel stuck or uncertain. Either is fine. Therapy can still be helpful.
I offer support and, where useful, some gentle challenge to help you move beyond old patterns and towards meaningful change.
Consultations typically last 40–50 minutes.

About me and my therapy practice
I offer a small number of clinical supervision places to fellow therapists. My emphasis is on providing a confidential, supportive and encouraging environment in which to review client work and reflect on your practice.
I have a particular interest in working with complex or entrenched clinical presentations and in supporting thoughtful, formulation-led practice.
My approach to supervision is integrative and I value flexibility and creativity, while remaining grounded in clear professional and ethical frameworks.
Supervision sessions can be held in person (Shoreham-by-Sea) or online.
Practice description
I hold a BPS-accredited certificate in supervision.
As a supervisor, I’m broadly influenced by the Hawkins & Shohet (2006) model, alongside integrative and relational perspectives. This allows space to attend to client material, the therapeutic relationship, and the wider professional context, while remaining responsive to the individual supervisee and their way of working.
I’m an Accredited Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (Â鶹Դ´) and a Fellow of the British College of Therapeutic Professionals (BCTP). I undertake regular professional training and supervision in line with ethical requirements.
My first session
An initial supervision session is an opportunity for us to talk about your practice, the kind of supervision you’re looking for, and to see whether we feel a good fit to work together.
We can discuss practicalities, frequency, and any particular areas of interest or focus.
