About me and my therapy practice
Hello. My name is James Wilson and I am an accredited therapist and creator of the Conscious Mind Empowerment Method (CMEM).
The Conscious Mind Empowerment Method is an evidence-informed approach to psychological and behavioural change. It is designed to help you better understand the internal barriers that can get in the way of meaningful change and learn how to respond differently when difficult thoughts, emotions or urges arise.
You may find yourself caught up in self-doubt, anxiety, low mood, overthinking, self-criticism or patterns of behaviour that do not reflect the person you want to be. Therapy can help you understand these patterns, but understanding is only half the story.
CMEM also focuses on helping you turn that knowledge into action. Together, we work towards greater clarity about the person you want to be, a better understanding of what gets in the way, and practical ways of responding with greater wisdom, kindness, values, logic and courage.
CMEM draws on principles from Metacognitive Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Compassion Focused Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, bringing them together within one structured approach to psychological and behavioural change.
Practice description
The therapy I offer is the Conscious Mind Empowerment Method (CMEM), an evidence-informed approach to psychological and behavioural change.
At the heart of CMEM is a simple idea: meaningful change has two phases — knowledge and action.
The knowledge phase is about understanding what is happening and why. Together, we explore the thoughts, feelings, urges and behaviours that may be contributing to difficulties in your life. We also clarify the person you want to be and the direction you want your life to move in.
CMEM uses the Two-Minds Framework to help make sense of these patterns. We distinguish between the Rooted Mind — shaped by learning, experience and instinctive protective responses — and the Conscious Mind, which represents our capacity to respond with wisdom, kindness, values, logic and courage.
Therapy helps you recognise when the Rooted Mind is influencing how you think, feel or behave, and develop the skills to allow your Conscious Mind to guide how you respond.
The action phase is about putting that understanding into practice, particularly in the moments when difficult thoughts, emotions or urges make change harder.
We do this through CMEM’s 4-Step Change Process:
* Focus Reset — helping you step out of the Rooted Mind so that your Conscious Mind can guide what you do next.
* Self-Compassion — responding to yourself with greater kindness and creating the conditions for positive change.
* Reframing — developing a different relationship with difficult thoughts and finding more helpful ways of seeing situations.
* Mindful Valued Living — taking actions that reflect your values and the person you want to be.
The aim of CMEM is not simply to help you understand yourself better. It is to help you turn that knowledge into action, so that when life becomes difficult, you are increasingly able to respond as the person you want to be.
My first session
In the first session, we begin by exploring what you would like to achieve through therapy.
Rather than focusing only on what you want to stop feeling or experiencing, we look at how you would like your life to be different, the person you want to be, and the ways you would like to think, respond and behave.
This begins the process of developing your CLEAR Goals, which give us a direction for the work we do together.
We then start building an understanding of what may be getting in the way of those goals. We explore relevant experiences from your past, what is happening in your life now, and the patterns of thoughts, feelings, urges and behaviours that may be keeping you stuck.
I will also introduce you to the Two-Minds Framework, helping you begin to recognise the difference between the learned, instinctive and protective responses of your Rooted Mind and the Conscious Mind, which enables you to respond with wisdom, kindness, values, logic and courage.
The first session is also an opportunity for me to explain the Conscious Mind Empowerment Method (CMEM) in more detail, for you to ask any questions you may have, and for us to begin identifying the areas we will work on together.
