About me and my therapy practice

Hello and welcome.

My name is Peter Hellsten and I am a psychodynamic counsellor, psychotherapist and trauma therapist with nearly 30 years experience in the helping professions.

I graduated from the University of Edinburgh, where I initially trained both in the psychodynamic and person-centred traditions, which continue to inform my therapeutic stance. In addition, I have undertaken further trauma-specific training with Janina Fisher PhD. at the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute.

As a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, I practice within a framework of ethical guidelines and standards.

I welcome anyone who feels that counselling and psychotherapy may be of help. You may want to explore a particular issue or situation in your life, or nurture your own growth. Working with me, you will be encouraged to stay curious, playful and open to the exploration of your own story and experience and how these may have shaped you.

As a therapist, I am equally committed to my own continuous personal and professional developmen, which has led me to reasearch and explore themes concerned with gender, sexuality, identity and what it means to be(come) an authentic person.

If you would like to meet with me for an initial consultion, please get in touch.

For now, take care and I look forward to hearing from you.

Practice description

My therapeutic practice is based on the notion that difficulties experienced in the present quite often have their roots in the past. We may, without being aware of it, have formed patterns of thinking, feeling, relating and behaving that may have become troublesome, unhelpful or unwanted in our lives today.

Counselling and psychotherapy can provide a nurturing relationship in a comfortable and safe environment, where we can give free expression to our feelings, explore our thoughts and reflect on our behaviours and experiences.

I welcome anyone who feels that counselling and psychotherapy may be of help. You may want to explore a particular issue or situation in your life, or nurture your own growth. In session, you will have the opportunity to gently explore what makes you 'you' - with an experienced companion by your side.

I am currently available to take new supervises on mainly Mondays and Thursdays.

About me and my therapy practice

I am an experienced and skilled clinical supervisor in private practice where I offer support to counsellors/psychotherapists at all stages of their professional journeys. Whilst I consider my core modality to be grounded in psychodynamic/psychoanalytic (particular French analytic traditions) traditions, my training and approach to supervision is integrative, combining knowldege from other modalities (i.e. CBT, TA, PC, Gestalt, Existential, Experiential and Somatic approaches).

In addition to my work as a clinical supervisor, I support a small group of private clients and also am part of a therapeutic community of independent counselling/psychotherapy and counselling psychology practitioners at A Quiet Room in Leith, Edinburgh (www.aquietroom.co.uk).
