I generally do individual counselling and trauma work on Wednesday's and Thursdays. The rest of my working week consists of teaching and supervision.
About me and my therapy practice
I’m an experienced counsellor, Social Worker and trauma specialist. Trauma may be a one-off traumatic incident, or specific experiences from childhood. Some experiences of trauma may be 'obvious' but developmental trauma, or those experiences formed through early relationships are just as valid, though sometimes trickier to 'get hold of' or talk about. I'm skilled in helping people to explore how previous experiences have shaped current problems, and then making new sense of these.
I’ve learned a lot about how to help people tackle pain, confusion and distress over the past 30 years. I won’t be shocked by what you say, I will understand how difficult it can be to get the words out, I know that there can be a huge amount of discomfort in your body at times, I know it can feel difficult or shameful to cry or feel other emotions. I can sit with pain and distress with compassion, but not be shaken by it. I won’t give you advice or ‘solve’ your problems, but I will believe in your capacity to work things out if you have sufficient space, time and support. I want you to meet your full potential in all areas of your life, and I will be an ally as you move towards that.
My career has been varied and has enabled me to work therapeutically with a range of people to explore difficult subjects. This includes working within the LGBT community, with asylum seekers and refugees, with foster carers, and with children and young people in care.
I have qualifications in Counselling, Social Work and trauma therapy. And I am registered with Â鶹Դ´, Social Work England and the EMDR Association UK and Ireland.
Practice description
I have been working with people in distress for over 30 years and bring a wealth of experience from working with people in a variety of settings. I particularly draw on my experiences of running a sexual violence charity and of being a Social Worker to enhance the therapy I offer.
My main trauma practice is EMDR, which is a powerful way of working that is recommended by the government to address PTSD but is also highly successful for people with Complex PTSD. However, I’m comfortable to work in different ways, depending on what you need, whether that is as a counsellor, trauma specialist counsellor or EMDR practitioner.
I work with issues from childhood including abuse, loss, trauma, relationships with family members; essentially, anything that has followed you into adulthood and stops you getting on with life or leaves you puzzled.
I prefer to work in person but I can be flexible if I think the work will be both safe and effective
My first session
I offer an initial meeting online for 30 minutes. This is so you can get a 'feel' for me and how I work and decide whether I am the right person for you to work with. It's also a chance for you to ask questions and for me to outline the key parts of our contract.
The meeting is a two way process and I will be deciding whether I have the skills, experience and current capacity to work with you
If we meet, and I don’t think I can help you, I will tell you and help you to find the right person.

About me and my therapy practice
My supervision practice draws upon all of my previous work across the voluntary and statutory sectors and the Â鶹Դ´, training and research, as well as running a successful therapy practice.
I have worked with specific groups of marginalised people; refugees, children in care, the LGBT community, people detained in secure settings, disabled people and those who have experienced sexual violence.
My direct work with people, and running a service for survivors of sexual violence led to me qualifying as an Integrative Counsellor, and subsequently, as a Supervisor. I now work two days each week with clients, and flexibly across the rest of the week doing supervision, teaching and regulatory work.
My specific areas of expertise are trauma, and particularly complex, or developmental trauma.
My training includes
* Advanced Diploma in Integrative Counselling
* MA Social Work
* Advanced Certificate Transactional Analysis
* Diploma in Supervision
* EMDR - accredited practitioner
Practice description
My current supervisory practice is varied, covering my areas of expertise and interest. As a former CEO of a charity, I supervise a number of senior leaders in the sexual violence sector. As a current Tutor on an Advanced Diploma in Integrative Counselling course, I have a particular interest in counsellors at the beginning of their professional practice.
I generally see supervisees monthly and agree how often to review all aspects of our work before starting. most of my supervisory relationships are longer-term but I am open to shorter term arrangements.
I have undertaken group supervision in the past and am very open to doing this again. However, if this was your interest, it would be best for you to find a small group, as developing and running a group is logistically challenging.
My first session
An initial online session is essential so that both parties can assess whether we would be a good 'fit', as well as an opportunity to discuss practical issues. This session, of typically 30 minutes, is not charged.

About me and my therapy practice
My current work includes trauma therapy, supervision, regulatory work and training. And I just love training and everything about it:
*The figuring out what is needed
* Understanding the steps to help participants from A to B
* Sourcing the content
* Devising activities to meet the aims
* Ensuring the programme is inclusive and value-driven
* Delivering in an accessible, meaningful and fun manner
* The challenge of thinking on the spot
* The de-brief and evaluation
I love working with managers and commissioners to get a programme 'just right' for an organisation so that the precious time people give to new learning is a good use of their time and really adds value.
I've been lucky to have had a training brief for every post I've had in the past thirty years, including:
* Training the police, councillors, multi-agency teams when leading an LGBT charity
* Training Social Workers, Foster Carers and managers when working for a local authority
* training teams in multi-agency assessments and interventions
* Training staff, volunteers and multi-agency teams when heading up a sexual violence charity
* Training academics when working as a freelance Researcher
* Training ISVAs, Specialist Support Workers and Counsellors whilst working as a freelance trainer (current)
* Teaching student Counsellors on a professional qualification Advanced Diploma (current)
