About me and my therapy practice

I work with clients whose impactful experiences in the past have left them with difficulties in the present. This can show up in many ways, perhaps the most common being depression or anxiety that seems to be disproportionate to the threats out there right now. I will help you discover the roots of your issues and 'file away' those painful but long-gone experiences, so that they are no longer in charge of how you live your life.

One area of special interest for me is helping people who have survived sexual trauma who need help to develop new ways of being in sexual relationships that are satisfying for the body and mind.

Is something stopping you from living a life that feels good, unstuck, and full of opportunities to reach your potential? Let's work together to probe, discover where the blocks are, and see how we can move you in a better direction.

Practice description

In my experience, the most effective therapy happens when the client and therapist collaborate and trust one another. Building a therapeutic relationship is my priority when working with a client.

My clients have usually been through some very damaging experiences, and I respect that it takes time and an investment from both of us to heal from past wounds and restore a sense of self-awareness and wholeness.

My approach is called 'integrative' because various theories inform my work. Knowledge of theory helps me integrate practices into my work, which will be appropriate, relevant, and helpful. One such practice is EMDR therapy. This approach uses bilateral stimulation (eye movements, sounds, and/or tapping directed to one side of the body and then the other in repeated sets) to help the body access its existing capacity to process memories of difficult experiences and to heal from them. This is well known as a treatment for trauma, but is also effective in reducing the distress and present-day impact of emotional wounds, especially those caused during childhood years.

My first session

Before working together, it's essential to have an initial call, at no cost, to identify the issues and determine whether or how I can help. Paid sessions will only proceed if both sides are committed.

About me and my therapy practice

I have been supervising counsellors for 13 years and enjoy this side of my practice. If you want to know how I work with clients, please refer to my therapist listing. With supervisees, I will always respect your level of training and experience and work with you at that level. I emphasise learning, growing, and challenging ourselves to be the best therapists we can be. I can be curious, reassuring, encouraging, and supportive, adding that crucial outside perspective and feedback to help keep you on track with your clients and professional goals. If you are getting ready to take on your first or a new supervisor, please call me, and we can discuss whether we will make a good match. Let's make supervision count!

Practice description

With trainee counsellors, my role includes helping you to build confidence in your placement practice. I have been a counselling tutor for many years, so I can easily understand the issues you might grapple with as you take on this valuable role with clients. I will help you understand and apply the theory without letting it take over. We will explore your clients' presenting issues and the impact of working with them on you. I will help you to keep your work rooted in the ethical standards of Â鶹ԭ´´ and best practice guidance. I will provide reports on your work as required by your training organisation and help you to understand and follow their guidelines for trainees.

With qualified counsellors, my role changes as you explore your professional identity and consider the various directions you can take your counselling practice. I want you to know that I will trust you to bring to supervision those issues which most need to be explored, and we will work on them together. This should be enjoyable and energising, leaving you feeling secure in your role.

With experienced counsellors, my role becomes more consultative. You already know what you are doing, so you need much less guidance. I expect you to come with well-prepared questions for supervision and enough information to give us a chance to take a deep dive into what might be happening for you and your clients. These discussions can go anywhere in psychology, philosophy, spirituality, and understanding the impact of neurodiversity and equity, for example. I want you to be inspired, not only by my contributions, but also by your own. We are a team!

My first session

I urge anyone looking for a new supervisor to research the opportunities well and discuss the role with up to five candidates. This is an important relationship: take the time you need to get it right. I am happy to have these discussions with no fee attached. If we go forward, it will be because you and I both believe this to be a good fit for a working alliance.

My charges are £75 for an hour and £95 for 90 minutes. I do not offer concessions for trainees because my offer is a valuable one, and usually, there is a lot of extra work involved, which I am happy to do if I feel my time is valued.
