About me and my therapy practice

I have learned that the most important part of your therapy journey is for me to be real and authentic, to listen and create space for you to feel at ease to talk and explore what is troubling you and for you to feel confident I will not judge and will not try and fix you.

I have spent the last 11 years practicing Buddhist meditation attending classes, courses, empowerments and in depth retreats.

I also read regularly and listen to talks by many authors and teachers such as:-

Tara Brach

Jack Kornfield

Brene Brown

Eckhart Tolle

David Michie

It is possible to weave a brief guided meditation into sessions if this is of interest and this can help to settle the mind.

The ‘busy ness’ of the mind is often the cause for many issues we face such as anxiety, stress, worry, sleeplessness, work issues, relationship issues and simply how we each view and experience life.

By focussing on seeing our thoughts as simply thoughts, learning to let them pass through and pay them less attention, we can find a way to feel the peace and happiness we are all searching for.We become less identified with what we think.

Practice description

Are you feeling anxious and unfulfilled with your life?

Do you feel lost and unsure of your true self?

Are you living your life to the fullest potential and achieving your hopes and dreams?Or perhaps not?

Do you find yourself over thinking/worrying/catastrophising causing you unhappiness?

Are you stuck in a revolving situation that repeats in many different yet familiar ways?

Our thoughts influence our feelings and thoughts can cause unhappiness for so many of us.We learn beliefs throughout childhood which then influence our adult years and while some of these will be helpful, others may not and are old, outdated and not true.

Therapy is an incredible journey of exploring who you truly are, bringing potential to change in ways that can turn your life around. This becomes possible only when you are ready, willing  and prepared to be your authentic self.

Learning to be as present as possible and be in the moment  can allow space and opportunity to face and experience life with an open, compassionate and kind heart  towards yourself and others.

We often don’t realise how much we are ‘in our head/mind’ and not in the moment until we pause and examine our thoughts.

Mindfulness practice such as meditating whilst sitting or walking or having an interest to focus your mind, can bring a gentle and quietening awareness that can transform your life experience.

I weave mindfulness practice into therapy, offering opportunity for you to awaken and grow whilst working through issues that arise or have brought you to therapy.

I aim to be open and accepting to help you feel able to explore whatever is causing you pain, distress or unhappiness.

I allow you to lead.  You can work as slowly or as deeply as you choose.

I will however be by your side and help guide you to finding out what it is that you question to find your own answers to what has brought you to therapy at this time.

My first session

Initial Consultation

You are offered a brief and free initial consultation lasting around 15 minutes. This is online using either Teams, FaceTime or WhatsApp video

This is an opportunity to both ‘meet’ before any commitment is made to book your first  session and for me to assess if I may have the experience and background to help you with the particular issues you are facing.

This is also an opportunity for you to ask me any questions you may have.

If you then decide to book your first therapy session with me I will email you a contract  which will explain confidentiality and it’s limitations, payment policy and cancelation policy.

My privacy notice will also be emailed for you to read and accept before your first session. This will explain how I keep data, for how long and the way it is stored.

I will also send bank details for payment to be made in advance of your session and on the same day you book your session. This is to secure the session so it cannot then be booked by anyone.

Ongoing sessions

I offer sessions in person for individuals in a quiet, calm and peaceful countryside location in a village midway between Barnard Castle and Bishop Auckland. Nearby parking is available.

I offer online sessions for individuals using Teams, WhatsApp Video and FaceTime.

I also offer Outdoor Therapy sessions walking and talking in quiet countryside surrounded by fields, sheep and horses offering an alternative tranquil setting to sitting indoors in a therapy space.

Spending time  outdoors and in nature has been proven to have a beneficial impact on mental health and wellbeing and often offers opportunity for clarity that may not be as visible or accessible  when indoors.

This can be an alternative and gentle opportunity to walk side by side allowing a different way of exploring issues amongst nature and the stillness and quiet it brings whilst also being private and confidential.

All sessions are 55 minutes.

Outdoor sessions however can be longer and can be discussed.

Availability

I offer supervision Tuesdays to Fridays between 08.00 and 16.30.

I also offer Saturday mornings between 08.00 and 13.00.

This can be face to face at a quiet and peaceful countryside location or online using either Teams,  WhatsApp Video or FaceTime.

I also offer supervision outdoors and this can be arranged at a venue of our mutual agreement or in a peaceful and quiet countryside setting locally.

The length and frequency of your supervision session will be based on your individual needs and that of your Registered Body and we will discuss this when we have our initial meeting.

About me and my therapy practice

Are you looking for a supervisor who creates space for you to explore the work you are doing with your clients, as well as an opportunity for reflection, challenge and growth?.

Are you looking for this in a space that allows you the safety and support you need to explore your relationship with your clients, your interactions and who you are with your clients?

Having practised as a TA psychotherapist for almost 30 years working in specialised services of addiction, sensory loss, sexual health and termination of pregnancy, and higher education across three UK universities, I eventually felt the time is right to complete my supervision diploma and be able to offer supervision sessions. I offer these to qualified counsellors, psychotherapists, psychotherapeutic counsellors, and psychologists.

My supervision style is growing and shaping all of the time and my focus is on you as the practitioner primarily, followed closely by your relationship with your client.

I weave into my supervision sessions as I also weave into my therapy sessions the practice of mindfulness, meditation and presence. This can take place during a session as well as being encouraged between sessions.

I have been a Buddhist practitioner for 11 years having attended many retreats, empowerment, courses and classes. The influence on my practice as a therapist and as a supervisor has been profound and has shaped who I am both in my professional and personal life.

I practice meditation in a formal capacity as well as meditative and mindful walking in nature which has been proven to have an immensely powerful impact on our mental health and well-being both ofor ourselves as practitioners and for our clients.

The way I am as a supervisor is the way I am as a therapist. I am led by my heart, compassion, and kindness. I explore theory and I also explore presence, being and stillness in equal depth.

If you would like to experience supervision with heartfelt authenticity between us both, I would love to hear from you.

Practice description

I am led by your needs from your supervision as everyone has their own individual way of working based on training, models and theories used. My theoretical training is TA however I would also describe myself as integrative adding mindfulness based practice to my core skills

If you are at the beginning of your journey as a practitioner, you may prefer guidance from your supervision and a more structured approach to how you use the time.

If you are a more experienced practitioner, you may wish to work in a more collaborative style. This can actually feel that we are meeting with equality being mindful of the potential of power imbalance  within a supervisory relationship.

I will always attempt to make the space that we are in feel safe to explore your work with your clients.  As therapeutic practice  can often feel isolating, your supervision is a unique opportunity to explore in an uncensored and unedited way how you are interacting with your clients. This allows for you to become the best version of yourself as a practitioner and this is what I would like to support you in achieving.

My influences as a therapist and Supervisor are varied and are based on authors and spiritual teachers such as-

Eckhart Tolle - completed Conscious Manifestation  and Lightness of Being courses

Tara Brach- completed Power of Awareness and Meditation and Psychotherapy courses

Jack Kornfield

David Michie

Mark Williams- completed Mindfulness awareness course.

Pema Chodron

Brene Brown

I listen to many podcasts and keep updated with CPD regularly as well as networking with other practitioners.

I have specific experience in the following areas-

Addiction - mainly substances (13 years as a Harm Reduction Counsellor)

Sensory Loss -mainly sight loss ( 20 years running a counselling service for a sight loss charity.

Sexual health and termination of pregnancy (15 years as Lead Counsellor)

Student Counsellor- (total period of 10 years at Falmouth and Exeter Universities, Teesside University and Durham University)

My first session

After you have first contacted me to enquire about supervision I like to arrange an opportunity for us to meet either in person or online to discuss your needs from supervision. This also gives me an opportunity to learn a little bit about you as a practitioner your particular areas that you working in, skilled in and are interested in. We can also discuss how supervision has worked or has not for you in the past and tailor how we can ensure you get the best from our supervision time together.

You are equally than able to ask me about my background, my experience, how I work as a supervisor and anything else that you feel is important for you to know before we commit to what can often be a long-term supervisory relationship.
I am fully aware that this relationship is unique, of immense value, and can create an anchor for you as a practitioner often working in isolation even if you work within a team of counsellors or in a multidisciplinary team. Plus, being a practitioner in private practice brings its own specific issues to supervision.

*I offer this initial meeting free of charge*

Supervision has always allowed me to have the space to explore that which I may not have in any other way. To allow me to become the best I can be with each client.
I aim to offer supervision in the way that I also know has been and still is for me……..great depth, authenticity and quite simply….. a space to be.
