About me and my therapy practice
A reflective and supportive space for counsellors, coaches, and dual practitioners.
"I'm very grateful to be working with Kay as my supervisor. She is highly experienced, warm and personable, and manages to ask such great questions that help me with my practice. I always emerge from supervision feeling motivated and 'held', both professionally and personally." Dr Mish Seabrook
I aim to provide a safe space for honest and useful conversations about all aspects of your practice. My approach is grounded in a humanistic stance, and informed by the Â鶹Դ´ Ethical Framework. I see your development as a practitioner as a key element of our supervisory relationship and my style is warm and supportive.
I extended my practice into supervision while undertaking a clinical leadership role in a counselling charity, supporting qualified and trainee counsellors with practice queries and ethical dilemmas. This experience gave me a valuable insight into client and counsellor experiences beyond my own practice.
I hold a Certificate in Clinical Supervision and am committed to supervision-related CPD. Recent examples include 'Anti Oppressive Supervision' with Myira Khan and 'The Supervisory Relationship' with Robin Shohet.
My counselling training was integrative, rooted in the person centred approach, with insights from other schools. My coaching training focused on 'the psychology of the self' with modules in career, organisational, leadership and wellbeing coaching. I am comfortable to work with counsellors, coaches and coach-therapists of varied modalities.
In my previous career, I worked for many years in roles involving the motivation, support and development of people, and I bring this experience into my role as supervisor.
I hold a Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling and a PostGraduate Diploma in Coaching and am accredited with the Â鶹Դ´.
I provide supervision both via Zoom and at my practice near Market Harborough. My supervision fee is £70 per hour or £100 for ninety minutes.
Practice description
What is supervision? I have tried to capture here my own answer to this question.
Normative, formative, restorative
My core framework is Inskipp and Proctor's 'triangle' model, which identifies three functions of supervision: normative, formative and restorative. The normative function is concerned with ethical practice and monitoring the work in line with professional standards and legal requirements.
The formative function is concerned with learning and development, including skills, knowledge, abilities and personal qualities. The restorative function is about you feeling heard and supported in the supervisory relationship.
For me, the last of these is the starting point. Supervision should not feel like an inquisition or an exam. It is a collaborative process in which you need to feel able to explore your thoughts and feelings about your client work, without fear of a judgemental response. We need to pay significant attention to your own wellbeing - you are after all the one that is in the room with your clients. Importantly, the normative function can only be effective if you feel you can be open about your client work, including any challenges and ethical issues, which we will work through together, with a focus on the Ethical Framework.
My personal beliefs and values
I agree with Carroll (2014) that the relational foundation of supervision is key - this accords with my own beliefs, values and experience of the conditions in which people do their best work. Just as with our clients, there needs to be a relationship of trust, and part of my role is to create the conditions in which trust can flourish.
I see supervision as essentially a process of learning through collaborative reflection. This mode of learning can be ultimately transformative, rather than being just about the exchange of knowledge and the acquisition of skills. The goal of supervision is to support the development of ethical maturity, wisdom and the practitioner's own 'internal supervisor'.
My first session
Following initial contact, I like to meet with potential supervisees on Zoom to understand more about you and give us both an opportunity to see if we are a good fit.
We will then review a draft contract and amend it as necessary for our needs.
We will review our supervisory relationship periodically to ensure it still meets your needs and is developing alongside your own development.
