The idea of integrating coaching into counselling practice is becoming increasingly popular. Where counselling is traditionally seen as therapeutic, working towards resolving emotional conflict, coaching focuses on behavioural change - with an emphasis on forward development. An approach which enables a practitioner to do both with our clients equips us with a wider range of tools, offering a more holistic way of working.Ìý
This professional development dayÌý(PDD)Ìýgives participants the opportunity to consider how they might use coaching within a counselling setting in a coherent and informed way. It provides an overview of key integration models for participants to consider in the context of their own work, to helpÌýidentifyÌýtheir own preferences for continued development. It alsoÌýfacilitatesÌýa discussion how we might practically approach integration within client sessions.Ìý
This PDD isÌýrelevant toÌýtherapistsÌýwith a knowledge of coaching who would like to explore options for developing their integrated coach-therapist practice. It will also appeal to counsellors interested in exploring the benefits of adding coaching to their practice. Some knowledge of coaching would be useful, but not essential.Ìý
Event aims
The main aims of this PDD are to:Ìý
- What? – Definitions appraising both similarities and differences between coaching and counsellingÌý
- Why? - Explore the benefits of integrating coaching into counsellingÌý
- How? – Review options for integration. An introduction to key theoretical models/types of how this can be done: eclecticism, single theoretical framework, fixed and open system integrations with a moreÌýin-depthÌýexamination of Popovic and Jink’s Personal Consultancy framework.Ìý
- The Pitfalls - Consider potential difficulties of integration and how to navigate them (ethics)Ìý
By the end of the PDD,Ìýyou’llÌýhave:ÌýÌý
- Better understand the value coaching can bring to your counselling workÌý
- Be more informed of theÌýdifferent waysÌýyou can approach integration as a practitioner and how you might do this both ethically and effectivelyÌý
- Consider your own preferencesÌýregardingÌýintegration for further exploration, with a view toÌýidentifyingÌýa plan for further personal developmentÌý
Programme
The PDD will begin at 9.30am and finish at around 1.05pm.Ìý
This workshop is split into threeÌý45-minuteÌýsessionsÌýand each will be followed by a live Q&A session with Judith Plastow.ÌýThe first session will begin at 9.30am and the event will finish 1.00pm with an extended Q&A session.Ìý
About the presenterÌý
Judith’s work focuses on supporting professionals who strive to be their best selves in the workplace, particularly during times when its demands and pressures can feel overwhelming. Drawing on an integrated counselling and coaching approach, she works with the whole person—helping clients reflect on their inner thoughts and feelings to better understand how these influence their behaviours. Through this process, she assists clients in identifying and addressing psychological barriers, enabling them to strengthen their personal resources, consolidate their strengths, and build lasting self-esteem. Judith retrained following her initial career in media and marketing, where she observed a lack of meaningful professional development opportunities to address prevalent workplace challenges such as the imposter phenomenon, ineffective stress management, and limited psychological support. These experiences informed her decision to pursue a more person-centred professional path, focusing on enhancing individual wellbeing and fostering sustainable personal growth within organisational contexts.
