What are counsellors' perceptions of how adverse childhood experiences affect adults’ self- perception?

What is the purpose of this research?
The purpose of this research is to investigate the effect of Adverse Childhood Experience (ACEs) on adults' self-perception and how counsellors experience it within a counselling setting.
I will examine several areas to gain a better understanding of the effects, including the emotions, as a counsellor, and what the client brings up regarding self-perception.

Who should take part in this research?
• Integrative Counsellors with at least two years of experience, who primarily work in a humanistic approach
• Counsellors who work with adults who have suffered from trauma in childhood or negative childhood experiences
• Counsellors who are registered with the Â鶹ԭ´´ (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) or are registered on Counselling Directory

Do I have to take part?
You can leave the study at any time, but I will set a 2-week withdrawal period after the interview. If you wish to withdraw from the study, the data will be deleted from my university's OneDrive account and will not be used any further in the study.

What will I be asked to do if I take part?

An hour-long semi-structured interview that will take place over Microsoft Teams and will be recorded both audio and video.
Examples of some topics that will be covered are:
• The emotions the client brings up around self-perception
• The impact that the self-perception has on their social world, and the impact it has on building trusting relationships
• Does the trust influence the types of boundaries they build between themselves and others
• The impact that working with individuals who have experienced adverse childhood experience have on, you as a counsellor

Benefits of taking part in the research
The opportunity to reflect on your experiences of working with clients who have experienced Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and the impact that it has on both the client’s life and on you as a counsellor. This study has no financial incentives.
