Bilingual and multilingual clients’ experience in person-centred therapy and working with different selves / parts
My name is Marta Pietruszynska. I’m conducting a research study as part of my MSc in Person-Centred Psychotherapy at Metanoia Institute.
The research explores how person-centred therapy enables bi/multilingual clients to integrate different parts of themselves. Parts that may have a different cultural background and be expressed through different languages. For some clients, their own language may stigmatize some emotions, or perhaps something traumatic happened to them in that language. What impact does that have on the therapeutic process? Can clients use a secondary language to heal and change?
I am intrigued if a therapists’ awareness around bi/multilingualism and cultural differences can help clients to actualise all parts of themselves. Is there a potential for a deeper integration of self and getting closer to the ideal self, if exploration of events in native language is encouraged?
What is involved?
The study involves an online interview with me, scheduled at the time suitable for you (60-90 mins).
I will use the IPA method to analyse my findings and summarize participant's personal exploration of the matter.
I would love to interview you, if:
You're bilingual or multilingual
You are a trainee or qualified person-centred therapist / practitioner
You have experience of person-centred therapy (as a client) not in your native language
Your taking part will be safe and confidential
Ethical approval has been granted by Metanoia Institute Research Ethics Committee.
Conducted in line with UKCP and Â鶹Դ´ ethical guidelines for research.
Data anonymised and stored securely in accordance with GDPR and the Data Protection Regulations for Social Research (2020).
Why participate?
The matter of multilingualism and culturally aware practice is relevant across the person-centred approach.
You would contribute to further research done on this subject, from the person-centred angle.
