Exploring Burnout, Compassion Fatigue, and the Wellbeing of Counsellors: A Mixed-Methods Study

I am a student on a L4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling course and currently conducting a research project as part of my course, exploring the emotional impact of counselling work, including experiences of compassion fatigue and burnout. The project forms part of my counselling training at Key Counselling Training.

This research explores the emotional impact of counselling work, with a focus on experiences of burnout, compassion fatigue, and the self-care practices used by counsellors to support their wellbeing. The study aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of how these factors affect those in the profession and to inform future support strategies for counsellors.

A mixed-methods approach is being used, combining quantitative data from the Professional Quality of Life Scale (ProQOL, Version 5) with qualitative responses from open-ended questions. The study invites participation from qualified and trainee counsellors currently practising or in placement in the UK. The anonymous online questionnaire takes approximately 10–15 minutes to complete. Participants can optionally volunteer for a follow-up semi-structured interview, which will explore personal experiences in greater depth.
