How Do Therapists Create Felt-Safety Within Couples Therapy? An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis.

Participation Entails

Participants will be invited to a 10 minute screening call to ensure our definitions of felt-safety align.
Participants will then be invited to take part in a 40-60 minute semi-structured interview over Zoom.

Research Participant Criteria

I am looking for up to five counsellors/psychotherapists who are:

  • Qualified psychotherapists/counsellors
  • Registered with an accrediting body
  • Two years post-qualification experience of couples therapy work
  • Training in a couples therapy model
  • Ideally with existing access to personal therapy/pastoral support
  • UK based and able to communicate in English.


Research Aims

1. To explore therapists’ experiences of creating felt-safety for their clients within couples therapy.
2. To explore how therapists working with couples make sense of felt-safety within couples therapy.
3. To identify principles that can enhance a couple’s experience of felt-safety both within couples therapy and within their relationship.
4. To increase professional knowledge for couples therapy work and inform future training to improve the experience of felt-safety for couples within therapy.
