Session one - The story so far:
Discovering AI's roots and realities

The story so far provides attendees with a description of the history of AI and its more recent developments. It aims to help you achieve a foundational understanding of what AI is and why it matters. It will cover the origin and history of AI alongside examples of where the technology is today. It will introduce the alignment problem. Complete this unit first to help yourself feel well-prepared for the discussions that will follow in years to come.
Session two - Creating good practice for counsellors:
Reflect upon ethical practice and the human connection

Building on the first session, we will continue to deepen our understanding of AI by exploring some of the central ethical issues that AI presents to counselling profession. We’ll examine how clients may be using AI in their daily lives and how we as counsellors can support them. Key topics include client privacy and confidentiality, AI and relational ethics, consent, note taking and supporting clients who use AI. By the end of this session, you’ll feel more equipped to support clients with confidence, clarity, and care as they encounter AI in their lives.
Session three - Preparing for the future:
Assess and shape your own readiness to practice responsibly

In this final session you’ll have the chance to discover your own stance on AI in your counselling practice. Through considering realistic scenarios, we’ll engage in thoughtful exploration of how to balance AI’s possibilities with our professional values. You’ll also learn the essentials of risk assessment, helping you to make informed decisions about if and how AI might fit within your practice. This session will empower you to move forward into the future with a responsible, considered approach to AI’s evolving role in counselling.
